Chapter 16: The Crucible

The morning of the proxy vote arrived. The sky over the city was overcast, heavy with the threat of rain.

Isabella stood in her office, looking out at the grey clouds. The heavy glass door opened, and Leo walked in, carrying the encrypted dossier containing all the proof of Julian's fraudulent, illegal leveraging.

"The board is assembling in ten minutes," Leo said, placing the folder on the desk.

Isabella turned around. She looked at her son. She saw the boy who had eaten ice cream in the park, and she saw the man who was about to go to war.

"This is the weapon," Isabella said, resting her hand on the folder. "If we release this to the Securities and Exchange Commission, Julian Sterling will be arrested before lunch. His firm will be dismantled, and he will face twenty years in federal prison."

Leo nodded. "He deserves it. He tried to destroy our foundation. He tried to ruin you."

"Yes, he did," Isabella agreed softly. "But look closer, Leo. If we drop this bomb, who else gets caught in the blast?"

Leo frowned, his mind racing through the financial models they had built.

"His employees," Leo realized, a heavy weight settling in his chest. "If his firm is publicly raided and dismantled today, the pension funds he illegally leveraged will evaporate instantly. The innocent people working for him will lose everything."

Isabella stepped closer to her son.

"You have the power to destroy an enemy today, Leo," Isabella said, her eyes searching his soul. "But if destroying your enemy requires the collateral damage of innocent lives, then you are no better than the men we fought ten years ago. How you wield this power will define what kind of king you will be."

She picked up the folder and handed it directly to him.

"I am not attending the board meeting," Isabella said, shocking him. "You are. This is your test, Leo. Use the shield."
