Chapter 1 - The Cold Hand of Fate

The silence in the grand ballroom was deafening. Matteo Moretti—a man whose name was whispered in dark alleys and marble boardrooms alike with equal terror—stared down at the girl trembling in his grip. His dark eyes, usually unreadable and icy, held a sharp, calculating focus as he evaluated the waitress standing before him.

Ava’s pulse raced like a trapped bird. Her jaw quivered, but she forced herself to meet his gaze. The warmth of the second $5,000 envelope felt heavy in the hidden pocket of her apron.

"Speak," Matteo commanded, his voice a low baritone that vibrated through her bones. "Who paid you?"

Ava’s throat felt coated in dust. She glanced over her shoulder toward the VIP balcony, but Celeste was already gone, leaving only an empty champagne glass on a high-top table.

"Nobody," Ava lied, her voice barely audible. "It was... a dare."

Matteo’s lips thinned into a dangerous line. "A dare. You dared to cross this floor, violate my personal space, and insult the Moretti family in front of three hundred guests for a dare?"

Before Ava could respond, two massive men in dark tailored suits appeared behind Matteo. "Boss," one of them murmured, his hand resting inside his jacket. "Do we remove her?"

"No," Matteo snapped, his fingers tightening slightly around Ava’s wrist—never enough to bruise, but firm enough to render escape impossible. He leaned down, his mouth inches from her ear. "You're coming with me. If you lie to me again, the people who sent you won't be able to save you."

Panic seized Ava's chest. "Please! I have to go home! My little sister—"

"Your sister can wait until I find out if you're holding a weapon or a wire," Matteo said coldly. He motioned to his men, and within seconds, Ava was being escorted through a private service corridor, away from the gasping crowd and the flashing cameras of the city's elite.

They brought her to a secluded holding room in the basement of the estate. The room was sterile, furnished only with a heavy oak table and two steel chairs. Matteo sat across from her, unbuttoning his tuxedo jacket with methodical precision.

"Search her," he ordered his head of security, a scar-faced man named Luca.

"No! Don't touch me!" Ava cried out, pulling back against the chair.

Luca hesitated, but stepped forward. Ava frantically reached into her apron and pulled out the thick white envelope, slamming it onto the table between them. Bills spilled across the polished wood—crisp, uncirculated hundred-dollar notes.

"That's it!" Ava sobbed, tears finally breaking through her defiance. "That's all it was! Ten thousand dollars! Five before, five after!"

Matteo stared at the money, then slowly lifted his eyes to Ava’s red, tear-streaked face. "Ten thousand dollars to kiss me? Who gave you this?"

"A woman in a red satin dress!" Ava choked out, wiping her nose with her sleeve. "Blonde hair, diamond choker! She said it was a joke! I didn't know who you were! I swear on my life I didn't know!"

Luca leaned in closer to Matteo. "Red dress... that fits Celeste Vance, Don Vance’s daughter. The rival family."

Matteo’s eyes darkened into something truly terrifying. He realized instantly what Celeste had tried to do. A public humiliation, a distraction, or perhaps a test to see how relaxed Moretti’s security was at a public gala. But his focus shifted back to the shaking girl sitting across from him.

"Why would a waitress risk her life for ten thousand dollars?" Matteo asked quietly. "That money wouldn't cover your medical bills if my men had shot you."

Ava swallowed hard, taking a trembling breath. "My sister... Mila. She's nine. She's being bullied because of her teeth... she won't even smile anymore. And our landlord gave us until tomorrow morning to pay three months of back rent or he throws us onto the street. I didn't have a choice!"

Matteo studied her face, looking for any trace of deceit. He found none. Only raw, desperate love for a child.
