Chapter 1 - THE TERROR AT THE ALTAR

The synthetic, distorted voice from the speaker was still echoing off the cold stone walls of the hidden vault behind the chapel altar when the main estate alarm went off. A high-pitched, deafening klaxon pierced the night, accompanied by flashing red emergency strobes that turned the sacred stained-glass windows into blood-red lenses.

Lorenzo Moretti didn't flinch. His reaction was pure, trained military instinct. In a fraction of a second, his heavy tactical pistol was drawn, his body shielding Sophia Hale and his eight-year-old daughter, Mia, who was clinging to Sophia’s waist in absolute terror.

"Lorenzo!" Sophia cried out over the roar of the alarms, her hands trembling as she clutched six-year-old Lily against her chest. Her arm, bruised and swollen from Valentina’s beating just hours prior, throbbed with white-hot pain, but her grip on her daughter never loosened. "Who was that on the phone?!"

"Keep down!" Lorenzo ordered, his voice a low, gravelly thunder that cut through the panic. He turned to his chief security officer, Marco, who was already keying into his earpiece. "Marco! Status report! NOW!"

"Boss! The outer perimeter gate was rammed by two blacked-out heavy armored vehicles!" Marco yelled over the noise, racking the slide of his submachine gun. "Security cameras at Sector Four are down! They used EMP devices—our primary communications are fried!"

Valentina, sitting handcuffed against the vault wall beside open ledgers that detailed her treason, let out a hysterical, blood-curdling laugh. Blood trickled from her lip where Lorenzo’s men had restrained her, but her eyes were bright with maniacal triumph.

"You're too late, Lorenzo!" Valentina sneered, her designer gown torn and dusty. "You think I came into this house alone? You think my father’s network rests solely on me? The syndicate knows about the key! They know about Sophia's bastard child! If I don't walk out of these gates in ten minutes, they will level this entire estate and take that little girl to the black market in Marseille!"

Lorenzo turned toward Valentina, his dark eyes void of any human warmth. He stepped forward, the barrel of his heavy firearm stopping a single millimeter from the center of Valentina's forehead.

"Say one more word about the child," Lorenzo whispered, his voice deadly quiet, "and I won't need a judge to sentence you."

Valentina’s smug grin instantly vanished, her throat working hard as she swallowed her spite.

"Sophia," Lorenzo said, turning back to face her. The terrifying mob Don vanished for a split second, replaced by a man looking at the woman who had just risked her life to save his empire. "Take Mia and Lily down through the priest’s tunnel behind the altar. It leads to the subterranean wine cellars under the north wing. It’s reinforced steel. No EMP can penetrate it."

"I'm not leaving you!" Sophia insisted, her voice breaking. "Valentina’s men know who I am! They're coming for Lily!"

"They won't get within ten feet of her," Lorenzo swore, reaching out with his broad, calloused hand to gently touch the bruised cheekbone where Valentina had struck Sophia earlier. His thumb brushed away a tear. "You brought me the bronze key, Sophia. You saved my life and my daughter's future tonight. Now let me protect yours."

Mia looked up at her father, her small voice steady despite her tears. "Daddy, don't let Sophia and Lily disappear."

"I won't, my sweet girl," Lorenzo promised, kissing Mia's forehead before looking deeply into Sophia's eyes. "Go. Now!"

Before Sophia could answer, the heavy oak doors of the main chapel blew inward with a deafening explosion of splinters and fire.
