Chapter 4 - BLOOD IN THE CELLAR

Before Victor Rossini could react, Lorenzo fired.

BOOM!

The heavy slug from the automatic shotgun hit the remaining mercenary square in the chest, lifting him off his feet and throwing him ten yards back into a row of wine barrels, which exploded in a torrent of deep red liquid that looked like blood under the dim emergency lights.

Victor gasped in terror, spinning around and grabbing Mia by the arm, pulling the eight-year-old girl in front of him as a human shield, pressing his silver pistol against her temple.

"Don't move, Lorenzo!" Victor screamed, his previous polite sophistication completely shattered into manic panic. "One step closer and I blow her brains out! I swear to God I'll kill her!"

Mia let out a small sob, but she looked directly at her father. "Daddy..."

Lorenzo stopped ten feet away. The barrel of his shotgun remained raised, but his breathing was slow, deliberate, controlled.

"Put the gun down, Victor," Lorenzo said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You're surrounded. Marco’s team has already cleared the courtyard. Your mercenaries outside are dead."

"I don't care!" Victor shrieked, his arm trembling as he held Mia tightly. "Order your men to stand down! Give me a helicopter to the airport, and hand over the bronze key ledgers, or your daughter dies right here!"

Sophia looked between Lorenzo and Victor. She saw the microscopic calculation happening in Lorenzo’s eyes—he was looking for a clear shot, but Victor was positioned too perfectly behind little Mia. A single missed inch meant Mia’s death.

Sophia looked at the jagged broken wine bottle still clutched in her right hand.

She took a slow, silent step to the side. Victor was so focused on Lorenzo that he had completely forgotten about the invisible housekeeper standing in the shadows three feet away.

Sophia met Lorenzo’s eyes across the dark room. A silent, unspoken communication passed between them in a fraction of a second. Lorenzo subtly shifted his stance, taking a heavy step forward to draw Victor's attention entirely.

"Look at me, Victor!" Lorenzo roared, stepping into the light, lowering his shotgun slightly as if surrendering. "I am the head of the Moretti family! Talk to me!"

"That's right, Lorenzo! Kneel!" Victor screamed triumphantly, shifting his weight to face Lorenzo fully.

That split second was all Sophia needed.

With a primal scream, Sophia lunged from the shadows. She didn't hesitate. She slammed the jagged glass bottle directly into the back of Victor’s right shoulder, stabbing downward with all her strength.

"AAGGHHH!" Victor shrieked in agony as the heavy glass shattered into his flesh, forcing him to drop his silver pistol.

Lorenzo moved like lightning. He closed the ten-foot gap in a heartbeat, kicking the silver pistol across the floor, grabbing Victor by his collar, and throwing his massive frame over his hip, slamming the older man viciously onto the concrete floor.

Mia stumbled backward, and Sophia instantly caught the little girl, pulling both Mia and Lily into her arms behind a heavy concrete pillar.

Lorenzo stood over Victor Rossini. He didn't use a gun. He delivered a devastating, bone-shattering right hook directly to Victor’s jaw, knocking three teeth loose, followed by a heavy boot to his ribs that rendered the syndicate leader completely breathless and broken on the floor.

"Marco!" Lorenzo barked without looking back.

Marco and four heavily armed Moretti guards rushed through the shattered entrance, their weapons trained on the room.

"Zip-tie him," Lorenzo ordered coldly, wiping a smear of blood from his own knuckles. "Put him in the primary holding cell beside his daughter. The Syndicate Council meets at midnight. I want them both alive to face trial."

"Yes, Don Lorenzo!" Marco nodded, dragging the groaning Victor away.

Silence fell over the subterranean cellar. The smell of copper, spilled wine, and gunpowder hung heavy in the air.

Lorenzo turned around slowly. He looked at Sophia, who was kneeling on the cold floor, holding both Mia and Lily tightly in her arms, her entire body shaking as the adrenaline began to leave her system.

Lorenzo walked over, dropping to his knees on the concrete right beside them. He pulled his daughter Mia into a tight embrace, kissing her hair repeatedly. "I've got you, baby. You're safe. You're safe."

Then, Lorenzo reached out his large, blood-stained hand and placed it gently against the back of Sophia’s neck, pulling her forward until her forehead rested against his chest.

"You stabbed a syndicate boss with a wine bottle," Lorenzo whispered, a low, breathless laugh escaping his throat despite the horror of the night.

"He threatened our daughters," Sophia sobbed into his chest, her fingers curling tight into his shirt. "I’d burn the world down before I let anyone hurt them."

Lorenzo held her tighter, his heart hammering against hers, cementing an unbreakable bond forged in the fires of survival.
