Chapter 2 - THE PRIEST'S ESCAPE

Smoke and the sharp, acrid smell of military-grade explosives filled the air of the chapel. Glass rained down like diamond dust as automatic gunfire erupted from the courtyard.

"Move!" Marco roared, laying down a wall of suppressive cover fire toward the smoking entryway as three masked mercenaries clad in tactical gear lunged through the shattered doorway.

Sophia didn't hesitate. Driven by pure maternal instinct, she scooped up six-year-old Lily in her arms—ignoring the agonizing tear in her bruised shoulder—and grabbed Mia’s hand. She sprinted toward the rear of the vault, where an ancient iron lever was concealed behind a statue of St. Jude.

She pulled the lever. With a heavy, grinding sound of stone against stone, a narrow archway swung open into pitch darkness, revealing a flight of damp, spiral stone stairs leading into the earth.

"Get in!" Sophia shouted to Mia, shoving the eight-year-old gently into the dark passage.

"Sophia!" Valentina screamed from behind them, struggling against her zip-ties on the floor. "You filthy little maid! You think you can take what's mine?! My father will skin you alive!"

Sophia turned for a fraction of a second. She looked at Valentina—the arrogant, cruel socialite who had treated her like garbage, who had beaten her, humiliated her, and threatened her innocent child.

"You lost, Valentina," Sophia said, her voice dropping into a cold, fierce tone she didn't know she possessed. "And your father is next."

Sophia hit the internal release button, and the heavy stone door slammed shut, sealing them into the darkness just as a heavy wave of gunfire shattered the vault outside.

The narrow tunnel was cold, smelling of ancient earth and damp moss. Emergency strip lights, powered by a secondary battery circuit, flickered to life along the stone floor.

"Sophia... I'm scared," little Lily whimpered, burying her wet face into Sophia's neck, her little body trembling violently.

"I know, baby, I know," Sophia whispered softly, kissing her daughter's hair as she navigated the steep stairs, keeping a firm grip on Mia's hand. "Mommy’s got you. Mr. Moretti is going to handle the bad men."

"My daddy never loses," Mia declared proudly, wiping her nose with her sleeve, though her eyes were wide with fear. "He made the bad men in Chicago go away. He'll make these bad men go away too."

They reached the bottom of the winding stairs after what felt like an eternity, entering a vast, subterranean brick chamber filled with centuries-old wine barrels. The sound of distant explosions muffled through twenty feet of solid bedrock above them.

Suddenly, a metallic click echoed from the shadows behind a row of oak casks.

Sophia froze, her blood turning to ice. She placed Mia and Lily behind her back, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Out of the darkness stepped a man wearing a immaculate grey suit, holding a sleek silver pistol fitted with a suppressor. He was older, with slicked-back white hair and cold, reptilian blue eyes.

Sophia recognized him instantly from the photographs in Lorenzo’s study.

It was Victor Rossini—Valentina’s father, and the grand mastermind behind the syndicate.

"Well, well," Victor purred, his voice like smooth velvet over broken glass. "The invisible housekeeper and her little bastard. You’ve caused my family a great deal of trouble tonight, my dear."
