Chapter 28: The Collapse
By nightfall, Aetherius Global was in absolute ruins.
The board of directors, terrified of the impending international indictments, convened an emergency, untelevised meeting and immediately ousted Damian Vane. The company’s assets were frozen by federal authorities, and their private security contractors in the Oakhaven Valley, realizing the paychecks had stopped, abandoned their posts and fled into the night.
Damian sat alone in the dark, cavernous lobby of the Geneva convention center. His phone had stopped ringing hours ago. His allies had abandoned him. His wealth was inaccessible.
He heard the quiet, rhythmic footsteps approaching before he saw the man in the black suit.
Elias stepped out of the shadows, his presence a towering monument of quiet, lethal grace. He stopped a few feet away from the ruined CEO.
"Why are you here?" Damian croaked, looking up with bloodshot eyes. "To gloat? To deliver the final blow?"
"The Calderons do not gloat," Elias said, his voice a smooth, icy baritone. "I am here to deliver a message from Madam Calderon."
Elias reached into his jacket and pulled out a single, beautifully embossed envelope. He dropped it onto the small table next to Damian.

"That is a one-way commercial airline ticket to Oakhaven," Elias explained. "And a court summons. You will not hide behind expensive lawyers in high-rise towers. You will stand in the dust of the valley you tried to destroy, and you will answer to the people whose water you tried to steal."
Damian stared at the envelope, the absolute, inescapable reality of his consequence crushing whatever remained of his ego.
