Chapter 25: The Matriarch’s Counsel
Despite the brilliant strategy, the human toll on the ground weighed heavily on Leo. The private security forces hired by Aetherius had begun cutting off electricity to the surrounding villages, attempting to freeze out the resistance in the dark.
Late that night, Leo sat in the command center alone, rubbing his tired eyes. The satellite phone on his desk buzzed.
It was Isabella.
"You look exhausted, my son," Isabella’s warm, grounding voice filled the small room via the encrypted video link. She was sitting in her office at the Foundation headquarters, thousands of miles away, yet her presence was as commanding as ever.
"He is punishing the innocent to get to me," Leo admitted, the frustration bleeding through his usually stoic facade. "Vane doesn't care about the money as much as he cares about winning. He’s willing to let people die just to prove he can."
Isabella leaned forward, her eyes locking onto the camera lens.
"Damian Vane is a relic of the world we destroyed, Leo," Isabella said softly. "Men like him believe that cruelty is strength. They believe that if they inflict enough pain, the world will eventually bow."

"How do you break a man who has no conscience?" Leo asked.
"You do not fight his conscience," Isabella replied, her voice ringing with the profound, hard-won wisdom of a queen who had survived exile. "You strip him of his audience. Vane's power exists only because his board of directors believes he is invincible. Expose his weakness to the people who hold his leash. Take away the shadows, Leo. Let the whole world see the monster."
