## Chapter 21: The White Truth

The hospital room smelled of antiseptic and lies.

Margaret lay on the bed, her neck secured by a brace.

She looked weak. But her eyes were sharp as a scalpel.

Nathaniel pulled up a chair and sat down.

He didn't ask if she was in pain.

She didn't wait for him to ask.

"Where is Vivien?" Margaret spoke. Her voice was hoarse but authoritative.

"She left."

The corner of Margaret's mouth curled into a faint smile.

"Good. She was too smart for what this family needs."

Nathaniel looked at his mother.

Looking at the woman who threw herself down the stairs to stage a scene.

"I saw the cameras, Mother."

Margaret's smile didn't fade.

It just shifted into a different state. Colder.
