Chapter 16

### Chapter 16: Rosa's Piece

Downstairs, Rosa knocked on Lily’s door.

No answer.

She opened the door and walked in.

Lily was sitting on the floor, drawing papers scattered all around her.

But they weren't children's drawings.

They were diagonal lines. Floor plans.

Staircases.

Rosa knelt beside the little girl.

"Lily, what are you drawing?"

The child didn't look up.

"I’m drawing what the house is thinking."

Rosa froze.

She looked closer at the papers.

In the corner of every drawing, Lily had written a number.

2:00.

2:15.

2:45.

Exactly the times the sensor system had recorded Margaret's "practice" footsteps.

Rosa gathered the papers, her hands trembling.

She understood that this house didn't just record.

It communicated.

And it had chosen Lily as its translator.
