Chapter 10 - Behind Prison Walls

The visitation room of the state penitentiary was sterile, smelling of industrial bleach and despair. Jasper Thorne sat behind the thick plexiglass window, wearing a faded orange jumpsuit. He looked hollow; his hair was messy, and he had dark circles under his sunken eyes.

The heavy steel door on the visitor's side opened, and Jasper looked up, expecting to see his lawyer. Instead, his eyes widened in shock as Julian Vance sat down on the metal stool, picking up the telephone receiver.

Jasper slowly picked up his phone. "Who are you? I didn't authorize this visit."

"My name is Julian Vance," the man replied, his voice smooth and comforting. "And I'm the man who is going to get you out of this place, Jasper."

Jasper scoffed, a bitter sound. "Nobody can get me out. My wife—my ex-wife—and her billionaire father made sure of that. They destroyed me."

"They did," Julian agreed, nodding sympathetically. "They used their immense power to crush a young, brilliant entrepreneur who dared to dream. Hailey Robertson played you, Jasper. She pretended to love you, lived in your modest apartment, and watched you struggle, all while sitting on a family fortune of billions. She wanted to see you fail so she could take your child and leave you with nothing."

Jasper’s grip on the receiver tightened. The humiliation of his downfall, combined with the grueling months in prison, had twisted his mind. Julian's words fed directly into his deepest, darkest resentments. "She took Toby. She won't even let me see photos of my own son."

"It's a tragedy," Julian sighed. "But it doesn't have to end this way. I have acquired the remains of Vanguard Tech. I have your mother and sister living in luxury again. And I have the best legal team in the country working on an appeal for your case. We can get your conviction overturned on a technicality regarding the asset seizure."

Jasper’s eyes lit up with a desperate, frantic hope. "You can get me out? Truly?"

"On one condition," Julian said, his eyes turning sharp and calculating. "To launch the new Vance-Vanguard platform, we need the master decryption key to your original neural network. I know you kept a backup copy off the main servers. Tell me where it is, Jasper. Give me the key, and I will destroy the Robertson family, reunite you with your son, and give you back your empire."

Jasper hesitated. The master key was his ultimate insurance policy. If he gave it away, he would have no leverage left. But looking at the cold metal walls of his cell, and remembering Hailey's cold, triumphant face at his trial, his anger consumed his caution.

"It's in a safety deposit box," Jasper whispered, leaning closer to the glass. "Under a false name. In the central branch of the City Bank. The key is hidden in the lining of my old leather jacket, which is currently stored in my mother's old house."

Julian's face broke into a predatory grin. "Excellent. You’ve made the right choice, Jasper. Soon, Hailey Robertson will realize that some empires are built on sand—and we are about to bring the tide."
