Chapter 18 - The Ultimate Price

The storm had fully descended on the mountain, turning the forest into a white, freezing void. Hailey sat bound to a heavy wooden chair inside the dark, dusty living room of the Thorne family cabin. The only light came from a crackling fireplace that cast long, dancing shadows across the log walls.

Jasper sat on a crate nearby, a crude bandage wrapped around his bloody face and leg, glaring at her with pure, unadulterated hatred. Dominic Vance stood by the window, speaking quietly into a satellite phone.

"We have them both," Dominic said into the receiver. "Tell the board to prepare the paperwork for the transfer of the Robertson Group's core assets. Hailey will sign, or she and her father will disappear in this storm, and no one will ever find their bodies."

Dominic hung up, walking over to Hailey. He pulled a thick folder from his coat and tossed it onto her lap. "Sign it, Hailey. It’s a complete transfer of the Robertson Group's proprietary defense and AI patents to Vance Global. Once the transfer is complete, you and your father will be released."

"You're lying," Hailey said, her voice hoarse but steady, her eyes locked onto Dominic. "The moment I sign those papers, you’ll kill us both and dump our bodies in the snow. You can't let us live to tell the police."

"You're right," Jasper laughed, a high-pitched, unstable sound. "We won't let you live, Hailey! But if you sign, at least your precious little Toby will live. If you don't, Dominic’s men in the city will pay a visit to the estate's nursery tonight. What’s it going to be, Hailey? Your legacy, or your son's life?"

Hailey’s heart hammered against her chest. She looked at her father, Finnley, who was tied to a support beam across the room, barely conscious, his head slumped forward.

"Don't... don't do it, Hailey..." Finnley muttered, his voice weak. "The Robertson family... we don't surrender..."

"Shut up, old man!" Jasper screamed, kicking Finnley's chair, making the older man groan in pain.

"Stop!" Hailey yelled, her tears finally spilling over her cheeks. "Stop! I'll sign. I'll sign everything. Just don't hurt them."

Dominic smiled, pulling a pen from his pocket and placing it in her bound hands, loosening the ropes just enough for her to write. "A wise choice, Ms. Robertson. Save your family."

Hailey gripped the pen, her hand trembling. She looked at the signature line on the document. If she signed this, her family's century-old legacy would be erased in a single stroke. But if she didn't, her son would die.

She lowered the pen to the paper.

Suddenly, the lights in the cabin flickered and went completely dark. The only illumination was the faint red glow of the dying fire.

From the woods outside, the loud, rhythmic thumping of heavy military helicopters began to shake the entire cabin. The windows rattled violently as powerful searchlights pierced through the glass, blinding everyone inside with a harsh, white light.

A booming, digitized voice echoed from the sky above:

"DOMINIC VANCE. JASPER THORNE. THIS IS THE NATIONAL SECURITY AGENCY. THE CABIN IS SURROUNDED. DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND STEP OUTSIDE WITH YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEADS."

Dominic’s face turned pale. "How... how did they find us? The satellite scrambler was active!"

Hailey slowly let the pen fall from her fingers, a cold, triumphant smile spreading across her face through her tears. "Did you really think I came here without a plan, Dominic? When you attacked the estate, my father’s tech team injected a tracking beacon into my collarbone. It didn't rely on satellite data. It used a low-frequency military distress signal that bypasses any commercial scrambler. The NSA has been tracking my location since the moment we left the city."

Jasper panicked, grabbing his gun from the table. "I'll kill you! I'll kill you before they take me!"

"Jasper, no!" Dominic yelled, lunging to stop him.

But before Jasper could pull the trigger, the front door of the cabin was blown off its hinges with a deafening blast. Flashbangs detonated inside the room, filling the space with blinding light and a deafening roar.

Hailey threw herself to the floor, covering her head as armed tactical officers in black gear poured through the shattered windows and doors, their weapons raised.

The final battle for the Robertson dynasty had begun—but the storm was far from over.
