Chapter 22 - The Shadow of Betrayal

"Marcus, cut the connection! Now!" Hailey screamed.

"I can't!" Marcus yelled back, his screen flashing a series of critical warning alerts. "They’ve locked our terminal! They’re using a reverse Trojan exploit. They aren't just draining the Swiss account—they’re bypassing our main firewall to access the Robertson Group’s central bank accounts!"

"Father's access codes!" Hailey realized with a shock of pure terror. She spun around to look at her father, but Finnley was already standing up, his face pale as he stared at the screen.

"They're using my personal encryption key," Finnley whispered, his voice trembling. "Only three people in this world have that key. Me, you... and your mother's brother."

"Uncle Charles," Hailey gasped.

Charles Robertson. Finnley's younger brother, who had been banished from the family business ten years ago after a failed embezzlement scandal. He had fled to Europe, and the family had assumed he was living in quiet, disgraced retirement. But he had been waiting in the shadows, nursing his grudge, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

"It was Charles," Finnley said, his voice shaking with a mixture of rage and heartbreak. "He was the one funding Julian Vance’s legal team from behind the scenes. He was the one who helped Jasper set up the offshore shell companies. He used the Thornes as a distraction to weaken us, so he could swoop in and steal the entire family fortune."

"We have to stop him," Hailey said, her eyes hardening. "Marcus, trace the reverse exploit! If he is using Uncle Charles's personal key, there has to be a physical hardware token connected to our local network. The signal isn't coming from Europe—it’s coming from inside this building!"

"The server room in the basement!" Marcus yelled, grabbing his tablet. "There’s an unauthorized hardware bridge connected to the main mainframe!"

"Stay here, Dad," Hailey ordered, grabbing a heavy security flashlight from the desk. "I’m going to cut the physical power to the mainframe."

"Hailey, wait! He might not be alone!" Finnley called out, but she was already running out the door.

Hailey sprinted down the grand, winding stairs of the estate, her heart hammering. She bypassed the security lobby and pushed open the heavy steel door leading to the basement server room. The air was cold, filled with the loud, white-noise hum of hundreds of server racks flashing with blue and green lights.

She walked slowly down the narrow corridors between the humming racks, her flashlight beam cutting through the shadows.

"Charles!" Hailey called out, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. "I know you're here! The police are already on their way. It's over!"

A soft, mocking chuckle came from the far corner of the room.

Walking out from behind the main mainframe rack was a tall, elegant man in a tailored gray suit. He had the same sharp, aristocratic features as Finnley, but his eyes were filled with a bitter, twisted malice. Charles Robertson.

In his hand, he held a sleek black tablet, which was displaying a progress bar: Transferring Funds... 87% Complete.

"Hello, Hailey," Charles smiled, adjusting his silk pocket square. "You’ve grown into a very capable young woman. It’s a shame your father kept you hidden in that middle-class illusion for so long. If you had been raised under my guidance, we could have ruled this city together."

"You betrayed your own family, Charles," Hailey said, stepping forward, her flashlight beam locked onto his face. "You partnered with thugs, criminals, and a fraud like Jasper Thorne."

"Jasper was a fool, but his code was brilliant," Charles shrugged. "And Julian was too arrogant to see that I was using him just as much as he was using me. But now, the Robertson fortune is mine. By the time the police arrive, the funds will be scattered across fifty different offshore accounts, and I will be on a private yacht in international waters."

"I won't let you leave this room," Hailey said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, low register.

"And how are you going to stop me, my dear?" Charles sneered, pulling a small, silver pistol from his jacket. "You’re a mother now, Hailey. You have too much to lose. Step aside, or Toby will grow up without a mother."
