Chapter 21 - The Secret Auction

"Who could have bypassed our purge?" Hailey paced the length of the Robertson boardroom, her voice sharp with tension. The digital display on the wall showed the dark web auction listing, a countdown timer ticking away the seconds: 38 hours, 14 minutes, 22 seconds.
"We checked the security logs of the Vance Global servers," Marcus said, his brow furrowed in deep concentration as he analyzed the data. "During the live presentation at the summit, right before you triggered the kill-switch, a secondary backup protocol was initiated from an external IP address. It wasn't Julian, and it wasn't Dominic. It was someone operating from within our own network."
Hailey froze. "Our own network? You mean a mole inside Robertson Enterprises?"
"It’s the only logical explanation," Finnley said, his expression darkening. He leaned forward, resting his hands on the mahogany table. "Someone on our board of directors, or someone with high-level administrator access, has been playing double agent. They copied the database before your purge could erase it, and now they are looking to cash out and run."
"If that database falls into the hands of a foreign government or a rival tech cartel, the security of our entire infrastructure is compromised," Hailey said, her mind racing. "We can't let this auction happen. Marcus, can we trace the physical location of the server hosting the auction?"
"It’s routed through hundreds of onion layers and VPNs," Marcus sighed. "But there’s one vulnerability. The seller is requiring a live, multi-signature verification of the cryptocurrency funds before the auction officially opens. They want proof that the buyers are legitimate. To do that, the seller has to establish a direct, real-time connection with the bidders for exactly three minutes."
"That’s our window," Hailey said, her eyes flashing with dangerous resolve. "We will enter the auction. We will pose as a private buyer from a Swiss trust. When they connect to verify our funds, we use our proprietary tracking algorithm to trace the physical signal back to its source."
"It's a huge risk," Finnley warned. "If they realize we are tracking them, they will instantly delete the data or sell it to the highest bidder on the spot. You have to play the part of a corrupt, desperate buyer perfectly."
"I’ve spent the last year of my life dealing with liars and thieves, Dad," Hailey said, her voice steady and resolute. "I know exactly how they think. Prepare the Swiss trust accounts. We are going to buy back our own property—and we are going to catch the snake inside our house."
The next evening, Hailey sat in the dark war room, a headset over her ears. The countdown timer on the screen reached zero.
A distorted, synthetic voice filled the speaker. "Welcome, Buyer Alpha. To verify your bid of five hundred million dollars, please connect your secure wallet now."
"Initiating connection," Hailey said into her microphone, keeping her voice completely flat and professional. "The funds are cleared. Verify the transfer parameters."
"Connecting," Marcus whispered, his fingers flying across his keyboard as a progress bar appeared on his monitor: Tracing IP... 12%... 34%... 56%...
"Your funds are acceptable, Buyer Alpha," the synthetic voice said. "But we require one more thing before we hand over the master keys. We know who you are, Hailey Robertson."

Hailey’s heart stopped.
"Did you really think we wouldn't see you coming?" the voice laughed, no longer distorted, but suddenly familiar. "Thank you for connecting your secure wallet. We are now draining your Swiss trust of the five hundred million. And we are going to release the database to the public anyway."
