Chapter 12 - A Mother’s Fury

The night before the Global Tech Summit, the city was electric with anticipation. Vance Global had rented out the massive Convention Center, inviting thousands of tech executives, journalists, and investors.

Hailey was in her private study at the estate, finalizing the code injection that would trigger the back-door exploit. Little Toby was sleeping soundly in the crib nearby, the soft hum of his baby monitor filling the quiet room.

Suddenly, the silent security alarm on Hailey’s phone began to vibrate violently.

Her heart stopped. The alarm was coming from the estate's perimeter gate.

Before she could stand up, the glass doors leading to the garden shattered inward. Two masked men dressed in black tactical gear burst into the room. Hailey reacted instantly, grabbing a heavy brass paperweight from her desk and hurling it at the first intruder, striking him squarely in the chest.

"Get the kid!" the second man yelled, lunging toward Toby's crib.

"No!" Hailey screamed. She threw herself onto the man, clawing at his face, her fingernails ripping his mask. The man roared in pain, throwing her off. Hailey crashed against the mahogany bookshelf, books raining down on her as a sharp pain shot through her ribs.

She tried to stand, but the first man pinned her to the ground, a heavy boot on her shoulder.

"Let go of me! Toby! Toby!" Hailey shrieked, fighting with feral, motherly rage.

The second man scooped the crying baby out of the crib. "We got the package. Let's go!"

"If you touch him, I will end you!" Hailey roared, coughing as she tried to crawl toward them.

Suddenly, the study doors burst open. Finnley Robertson stood there, holding a sleek black shotgun. Without hesitation, he fired a warning shot into the ceiling, the deafening blast echoing through the room.

"Drop him," Finnley roared, his face contorted in absolute, terrifying rage. "Drop my grandson, or you will not leave this room alive."

The man holding Toby panicked. Realizing they were cornered, he threw the baby onto the soft plush sofa and dove through the shattered glass doors into the darkness of the garden, his partner close behind.

Hailey scrambled across the floor, catching Toby in her arms just as he began to wail. She held him tight against her chest, rocking him back and forth, her tears soaking his tiny pajamas. "I've got you, baby. Mommy's here. I've got you."

Finnley lowered the shotgun, his hands trembling with a mixture of rage and relief as he ran to his daughter's side. "Are you okay? Is he hurt?"

"He's okay," Hailey sobbed, her voice shaking but rapidly hardening into something incredibly cold and lethal. She looked up at her father, her eyes filled with a terrifying, unyielding fury. "It was Julian. He tried to kidnap my son to stop me from going to the summit tomorrow."

She slowly stood up, cradling Toby tightly. The pain in her ribs was gone, replaced by a cold, burning desire for total destruction.

"They crossed the line, Dad," Hailey whispered, her voice deadly quiet. "Tomorrow, I don't just want to stop Julian Vance. I want to ruin him. I want to destroy the Thorne family so completely that their name becomes a curse in this city. Get the car ready. We are going to the summit."
