Chapter 8 - Whispers from the Ashes

Six months passed. At the Robertson estate, life was a symphony of luxury and growth. Little Toby was crawling now, his laughter echoing through the grand halls. Hailey had fully stepped into her role as the Executive Vice President of Robertson Enterprises, proving to the board members who had once doubted her that she possessed her father’s lethal business instincts.

But peace in the high-society world of the elite is always a temporary illusion.

One Tuesday afternoon, Hailey’s assistant, a sharp young man named Marcus, knocked urgently on her office door. "Ma'am, you need to see this. We’ve been monitoring the liquidation of Vanguard Tech’s remaining intellectual property."

"Did the creditors sell off the patent portfolio?" Hailey asked, not looking up from her tablet.

"Yes, but not to a standard tech conglomerate," Marcus said, placing a file on her desk. "The buyer used a complex network of offshore shell companies based in the Cayman Islands. It took our forensic accountants three days to trace the ultimate beneficial owner."

Hailey paused, her fingers hovering over the screen. "And who is it?"

"Gillian Thorne," Marcus revealed.

Hailey frowned, a chill running down her spine. "Gillian? She doesn't have the intellectual capacity to set up a foreign trust, let alone the millions required to buy Vanguard's core AI algorithms. Where did she get that kind of capital?"

"We don't know yet," Marcus admitted. "But there's more. Gillian and Priscilla have recently returned to the city. They’ve rented a penthouse in the Upper East Side—funded by the same offshore trust. They are styling themselves as 'wronged victims' of your family's corporate greed, and they’ve been meeting with several of Robertson Enterprises’ direct competitors."

Hailey stood up, walking to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the city skyline. She had thought cutting Jasper off would be the end of it. But she had underestimated the parasitic nature of the Thorne family. Gillian and Priscilla weren't just surviving; they were weaponizing Jasper's failure to mount a comeback.

"Find out who is backing them," Hailey ordered, her voice dangerously quiet. "A snake cannot strike without a head. Someone is funding the Thornes to use them as a weapon against my family."

"On it," Marcus nodded, turning to leave.

Just as the door closed, Hailey’s personal phone rang. It was an unknown, restricted number. She hesitated, then swiped to answer.

"Did you think it would be that easy, Hailey?" a sharp, venomous voice laughed through the receiver. It was Priscilla. "Did you think you could just throw my brother in prison and enjoy your billions while we starved in the mud?"

"Priscilla," Hailey said, her voice completely flat. "If you are calling to beg for charity, you are wasting your breath. I suggest you take whatever stolen money you have left and run."

"Oh, we aren't running anymore, sister-in-law," Priscilla sneered. "In fact, we just found a very wealthy, very powerful friend who hates the Robertson family just as much as we do. Enjoy your peace while it lasts, Hailey. Because we are coming for your company, and we are coming for Toby."

The line went dead. Hailey slowly lowered the phone, her heart hammering against her ribs. They were targeting her son.
