Chapter 5 - The Master's Move

Inside the sprawling, triple-height penthouse at the top of the Robertson Plaza, the atmosphere was a world away from the chaos of the city below.
Hailey sat in a comfortable plush armchair by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding Toby against her chest. The newborn was sleeping peacefully, his tiny fingers curled around the edge of his soft blue blanket. Dr. Catherine, the private family physician, had just finished checking Hailey's C-section incision, declaring her stable but stressing the need for continued rest.
"You have a very strong daughter, Finnley," Catherine said to the tall, silver-haired man standing by the fireplace.
Finnley Robertson turned around. His face was a map of power and quiet authority, but his eyes were filled with soft, maternal warmth as he looked at his daughter and grandson. "She has her mother's steel. And my temper."
"I'm fine, Dad," Hailey smiled, though her eyes were tired. "I just want this over with. I don't want Toby to ever grow up in the shadow of a man like Jasper."
"He won't," Finnley said, walking over to press a gentle kiss to Hailey’s forehead. "By the time the sun sets today, Jasper Thorne will be a footnote in your history."
Arthur, the family's chief legal counsel, stepped into the penthouse, carrying a sleek black folder. "Mr. Robertson. Miss Hailey. The trap is fully sprung. Jasper Thorne has spent the last two hours desperately trying to contact every bank in the city. None of them will take his calls. His investors have officially abandoned him. He is currently sitting in his empty apartment, realizing that his 'empire' was nothing but a sandcastle."
"And his company, Vanguard Tech?" Hailey asked.
"As you know, Hailey, the proprietary software Vanguard uses for their data encryption was licensed from a subsidiary of Robertson Global," Arthur explained with a slight smirk. "We have officially terminated the licensing agreement due to 'material breach of the ethical conduct clause' in the contract. Without that software, Vanguard’s product is nothing but useless code. They are technically bankrupt as of three minutes ago."
At that moment, Hailey’s phone buzzed. It was Jasper.
She looked at her father, who nodded slowly. Hailey swiped the screen, placing the call on speaker.
"Hailey!" Jasper’s voice burst through the speaker, high-pitched, desperate, and completely broken. "Hailey, please! You have to talk to your father! There’s been a massive misunderstanding! The car... the apartment... everything! I was just stressed, Hailey! The pressure of the funding round was getting to me, and my mother was pressuring me to show her around. I didn't mean to leave you at the hospital! I swear!"
Hailey let out a soft, dry laugh. "Jasper. You gave me pocket change for a city bus five days after my C-section. You didn't even ask if I could carry our son's bag. You let your sister mock me while I was bleeding from surgery."
"I was wrong!" Jasper sobbed, the sound of his heavy, panicked breathing audible. "I'll do whatever you want! I’ll kick my mother out! I’ll fire Priscilla! Just tell your father to release our accounts! If we don't close the Apex deal by tomorrow, Vanguard is dead! I'll be ruined!"
"Vanguard is already dead, Jasper," Hailey said, her voice dropping to an icy, calm level that made Jasper freeze on the other end of the line. "And so is our marriage. My father didn't destroy your company. Your own arrogance did. You wanted to marry a 'simple girl' because you thought you could control her. But you never controlled me, Jasper. I just let you hold the leash for a little while to see where you'd run."
"Hailey, please—"

"Goodbye, Jasper. Don't call this number again. My lawyers will handle the rest."
She hung up, the silence of the penthouse rushing back in, clean and free.
