Chapter 9 - The Viper in the NestThe private jet ride back to the Valerius Estate felt agonizingly slow. For twelve hours straight, Evelyn sat in the leather cabin of her aircraft, staring at the cryptic note from Kross, her mind racing through every single person who had access to her home, her trust, and her daughter.

At your dinner table.
Marcus was in a federal maximum-security prison. Veronica was locked away in a correctional facility miles away. Chloe was in juvenile rehabilitation. Who else remained? Who else sat across from her and Lily, sharing meals, smiling warmly, and pretending to be a loyal confidant?
Then, a name flashed in Evelyn’s mind with terrifying clarity: Julian Vance.
Marcus’s younger cousin—a quiet, unassuming architect who had conveniently appeared out of nowhere just three weeks after Evelyn’s return, claiming he wanted to help rebuild the family estate's architectural heritage. Evelyn had welcomed him with open arms, touched by his apparent kindness toward Lily and his gentle, supportive demeanor.
He had dined with them every Sunday. He had helped Lily pick out her art supplies. He had even designed the new secure perimeter layout for the mansion.
He designed the perimeter layout.
The realization hit Evelyn like a physical blow. The security system that was supposed to protect her daughter had a secondary backdoor—one known only to its architect.
When the town car finally pulled through the iron gates of the Valerius Estate, it was late evening. The mansion glowed warmly against the dark night sky, amber light spilling from the French windows of the dining room.
Evelyn didn't use the front entrance. Leaving her luggage in the car, she circled around the side of the house, moving through the shadowed perimeter of the rose garden until she reached the French doors of the ground-floor study, which led directly into the main dining hall.
She peered through the glass.
Inside, Julian Vance sat comfortably at the head of the mahogany dining table. Across from him, eating a plate of pasta, sat little Lily. Standing behind Lily was a private nanny Evelyn had hired two months ago—a quiet woman named Greta, whose hands were currently resting firmly on the little girl's shoulders.
"Eat up, Lily," Julian said, his voice smooth and honeyed, carrying a chilling undercurrent that Evelyn had never noticed before. "Because tomorrow, you and your mother are going to take a very long, unexpected trip."
Evelyn’s grip on her concealed sidearm tightened until her knuckles turned white.
"Where is Mommy going?" Lily asked, her voice sounding unusually sluggish, her eyelids drooping heavily as she stared down at her plate.
"Nowhere you need to worry about, little bird," Julian smiled, swirling a glass of red wine. "Just resting. Permanently. And once she's out of the way, the entire Valerius legacy—every single patent, every offshore account, every acre of this land—reverts to the sole surviving male heir. Me."
Greta, the nanny, leaned down and whispered into Lily’s ear. The little girl’s head slumped forward, fast asleep, the sedative in her food finally taking full effect.

Julian set his wine glass down, a triumphant, wicked grin spreading across his face as he raised his voice.
"You can stop hiding in the dark garden, cousin-in-law," Julian called out toward the glass doors, not even looking up. "I knew you’d figure it out eventually. But you’re twenty-four hours too late."
