Chapter 17 - The Restoration of the Realm

Two weeks after the collapse of Viktor’s syndicate cell, the Valerius Estate felt lighter than air. The federal investigation had officially cleared the family name of any remaining corporate or intelligence entanglements, locking away the last of the corrupt operatives into maximum-security facilities from which they would never escape.
Inside the grand conservatory, the sunlight poured through sparkling glass panes, illuminating the vibrant green leaves of the imported palm trees and the rich, velvety petals of the black heirloom roses blooming vibrantly outside in the courtyard.
Lily sat at her brand-new wooden easel, humming a cheerful tune as she dipped her paintbrush into a palette of bright golden yellow and deep emerald green.
Evelyn stood nearby, leaning against the doorway with a warm, relaxed smile. The dark shadows of her past—the desert prison, the Syndicate dossiers, the endless parade of treacherous relatives—had finally dissolved into the clear, bright light of the present.
"Mommy," Lily called out, turning around with a bright, proud grin. "Look! I finished it!"
Evelyn walked over and knelt down beside the easel. On the canvas was the finest painting Lily had ever created: a magnificent, glowing fortress standing tall against a sunrise, guarded by a radiant silver queen and a little princess holding hands beneath a sky full of peaceful stars.
"It is a masterpiece, my sweet bird," Evelyn said softly, wrapping her arms around Lily and pulling her into a warm, lingering embrace. "The greatest masterpiece in the world."

"And we're never leaving our castle, right?" Lily asked, looking up with her big, innocent emerald eyes.
"Never," Evelyn promised, her voice steady, absolute, and filled with infinite love. "Our mission is complete. From now on, we only look forward."
