Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Execution

The sixty-fifth floor of Vance Tower was usually a place of quiet, calculated luxury where executives traded millions with the stroke of a pen. Today, however, the executive boardroom felt less like a corporate office and more like a tomb awaiting its occupants.
Marcus Vance sat at the head of the polished mahogany table, swirling a glass of twenty-year-old scotch. He looked impeccably sharp in a charcoal bespoke suit, his silver-streaked hair giving him an air of distinguished authority. Surrounding him were the senior board members—men and women he had carefully bought, bribed, or manipulated over the past year while Evelyn was trapped behind enemy lines.
"Gentlemen," Marcus began, his voice smooth and confident, "as you know, the integration of the Langley assets is nearly complete. With Veronica's social influence and our corporate dominance, Vance Holdings is poised to monopolize the entire Eastern seaboard by Q4."
A murmur of polite agreement rippled around the table. None of them dared mention the missing wife, the woman whose blood, sweat, and tactical genius had built half the company in the first place. To them, Evelyn Vance was just a tragic footnote—a casualty of war whose sudden disappearance had been a convenient catalyst for their expansion.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the boardroom didn't just open—they slammed violently against the reinforced walls, rattling the crystal water pitchers on the table.
Marcus frowned, irritation flashing across his handsome face. "I gave strict instructions that we were not to be disturbed—"
He stopped mid-sentence.
The doors remained wide open. Walking down the center aisle was Evelyn. She had cleaned up; she now wore a tailored, midnight-black military-grade trench coat over a high-collared silk blouse, her combat boots replaced by sleek, polished heels that clicked with terrifying authority. Clinging tightly to her hand was Lily, dressed in a clean, beautiful velvet dress that Evelyn had pulled from the child's hidden winter wardrobe before leaving the estate.
Marcus dropped his crystal glass. It shattered against the plush Persian rug, spilling dark amber scotch across the floor like fresh blood.
"Evelyn..." Marcus choked out, his color instantly draining until he looked like a corpse dredged up from the bottom of a river. He half-rose from his leather executive chair, his hands gripping the edge of the table so hard his knuckles turned bone-white. "That's... that's impossible. You're dead. The military confirmed your unit was wiped out..."
"Did they, Marcus?" Evelyn’s voice cut through the cavernous room like a razor-sharp blade. She walked right up to the head of the table, gently guiding Lily to sit in a plush leather chair beside her. "Strange. Because I distinctly remember surviving every single trap, every single bullet, and every single interrogation—all while waiting for the extraction team that you secretly canceled."
The board members gasped, whispering frantically among themselves. The oldest member of the board, Chairman Henderson, adjusted his glasses with trembling hands.
"Mrs. Vance? Is that really you? But... Mr. Vance presented us with a legal death certificate, a signed waiver of estate, and—"
"And a mountain of forged documents," Evelyn finished smoothly, tossing a thick manila folder directly onto the center of the mahogany table. It slid across the polished wood, stopping right in front of Marcus. "Forged power of attorney signatures. Illegal liquidation of my personal trust funds. Securities fraud. And, to top it all off, conspiracy to commit child endangerment and abuse."
Marcus stared at the folder, his chest heaving as panic threatened to overwhelm his carefully cultivated composure. He snapped his head up, glaring wildly around the room. "She's lying! This woman is an impostor! Security! Guards, remove this lunatic from the building immediately!"
No one moved.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the private elevators chimed. The heavy steel doors slid open, but instead of corporate staff, four heavily armed federal marshals and two agents from the Department of Defense stepped out, their badges gleaming coldly under the fluorescent lights.
Lead Agent Miller stepped forward, his eyes locked onto Marcus Vance.
"Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for federal identity fraud, corporate embezzlement, obstruction of justice, and treasonous tampering with classified military estates," Agent Miller announced, his voice echoing cleanly through the silent boardroom.
Two of the marshals moved swiftly behind Marcus, grabbing his arms and yanking him out of his executive chair before he could protest.
"You can't do this!" Marcus thrashed wildly, his polished veneer completely shattering as the cold steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists. He looked desperately at Evelyn, his eyes wide with terror and pleading. "Evelyn, please! We were a family! Think of Lily! You can't destroy everything we built together!"

Evelyn didn't even blink. She slowly walked around the table, stopping just inches from her traitorous husband. Her gaze was as cold and empty as the deep space she had mentally inhabited during her months in captivity.
"You built nothing, Marcus," Evelyn whispered softly, so only he could hear. "You merely squatted in my kingdom while I was away. And now... eviction day has arrived."
