Chapter 3 - The Ghost’s Return

The guards stopped dead in their tracks. They had been hired to intimidate maids and frighten a seven-year-old child, not to stare down someone who radiated the unmistakable, bone-chilling aura of a apex predator. One of the guards squinted at the platinum card in Evelyn’s hand, his face draining of color as he recognized the high-security cryptographic watermark shimmering beneath the light.
"Wait... that's..." The guard took a hesitant step backward, his hand falling away from his utility belt. "That's the master sovereign key. Only the primary founder..."
"Shut up! She's a fraud! It's a forged piece of junk!" Veronica screamed, her voice cracking with rising hysteria as she rushed forward to shove the guard's shoulder. "Marcus told me she died in a plane crash in the Middle East! Her death certificate is locked in the family vault! Throw her out right now, or I'll fire both of you and blacklist your security firm!"
Caught between the terrifying presence of the woman holding the master key and the shrieking fury of the woman currently signing their paychecks, the guards hesitated.
Evelyn didn't give them time to think. With a blur of lightning-fast precision, she closed the distance between herself and the nearest guard. Before he could raise his arms, she hooked her foot behind his ankle and delivered a sharp palm-strike to his chest. The 250-pound man folded like a cheap lawn chair, crashing heavily onto the marble floor with the wind completely knocked out of him.
The second guard lunged forward with a baton, but Evelyn ducked under the wild swing, spun inside his guard, and delivered a devastating elbow strike to his jaw. He dropped instantly, unconscious before he hit the ground.
The entire fight took less than four seconds.
Veronica stumbled backward, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. Chloe was still whimpering in the corner among the broken ceramic pots, too terrified to even scream.
Evelyn stepped over the groaning security guard, her boots clicking rhythmically against the floor as she advanced on Veronica.
"You mentioned a death certificate, Veronica," Evelyn said softly, her emerald eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "How interesting. Because last time I checked, an active-duty operative on a classified black-ops assignment cannot be legally declared dead without the direct, unanimous authorization of the high command—an authorization that requires my personal thumbprint and retinal scan."
She stopped inches away from Veronica, towering over the terrified socialite.
"Marcus thinks he can play God with my estate while I was away fighting for this country?" Evelyn’s voice was a lethal whisper. "He forged documents. He invited parasites like you into my home. And worst of all... he allowed you to abuse my daughter."
"Marcus is the CEO now!" Veronica shrieked, clutching her designer handbag to her chest like a shield. "He runs the board! He married me three months ago! You’re just a ghost, an illegal squatter! The police will be here in five minutes, and they'll lock you away in a lunatic asylum where you belong!"
"Let them come," Evelyn replied calmly. She reached into her pocket once more, pulling out a sleek, encrypted satellite phone. With two taps on the screen, she broadcasted a high-priority sub-routine directly into the Vance Global mainframe.
Across the city, in the sixty-story monolith of Vance Tower, every single computer monitor, digital billboard, and security terminal suddenly flickered. The corporate logo of Vance Holdings vanished, replaced instantly by a flashing, unbypassable administrative override code: IDENTITY RESTORED. SYSTEM OWNER ONLINE: EVELYN VANCE.
Back in the mansion, Veronica's phone—and every television screen in the house—suddenly buzzed violently to life. The automated home intelligence system chimed, its robotic voice echoing through the halls:
Warning. Master Biometric Override detected. All secondary accounts frozen. Welcome back, Director Vance.
Veronica stared at her phone in absolute horror as her banking apps flashed red, displaying a brutal, unforgiving message: Account Suspended due to Identity Fraud.
"No..." Veronica whispered, her knees finally buckling. "No, this isn't possible... Marcus said you were gone forever..."

Evelyn turned her back on the crumbling socialite, kneeling down to scoop little Lily gently into her arms. The child buried her face in Evelyn's neck, safe and warm at last.
"Come, my love," Evelyn whispered, kissing Lily’s forehead. "Let's go pack your bags. We are going to reclaim everything that is rightfully ours—starting with your father."
