Chapter 5 - The Purge of the Usurpers

Within forty-eight hours, the illusion Marcus and Veronica had constructed collapsed like a house of cards built on quicksand.
With Evelyn back at the helm of Vance Global Holdings, the corporate cleansing was swift, merciless, and absolute. Every board member who had willingly accepted bribes to sign off on Marcus’s illegal asset transfers was given a choice: resign immediately and surrender their illegally acquired stock options, or face federal indictments alongside Marcus. Not a single one chose to fight. They knew the legend of Agent Ghost; fighting her in court was corporate suicide.
Back at the Valerius Estate, the atmosphere of dread and vulgarity was being systematically dismantled.
Veronica Langley sat in the grand foyer, surrounded by half-packed cardboard boxes, sobbing hysterically as two court-appointed bailiffs supervised her expulsion from the mansion. Every piece of designer clothing, every piece of jewelry Marcus had bought her with embezzled funds, and every piece of gaudy European furniture she had installed was cataloged as stolen property and seized by the state.
"You can't do this to me!" Veronica shrieked, clutching a fur coat to her chest as she glared at Evelyn, who stood calmly on the second-floor landing, watching the eviction like a queen inspecting her cleared courtyard. "I am a prominent socialite! I have rights! My lawyers will—"
"Your lawyers dropped your case twenty minutes ago when their retainer checks bounced due to your frozen accounts," Evelyn interrupted, her voice entirely devoid of emotion. "You have ten minutes to clear the property, Veronica. After that, the local sheriff will escort you off the premises."
Chloe stood nearby, sullen and red-eyed, refusing to look at anyone. The realization that their golden parachute had completely vanished had finally broken their arrogant spirits. As Veronica was dragged out the heavy iron gates by the bailiffs, the estate finally fell quiet—a peaceful, cleansing silence that hadn't been felt in this house for over a year.
Later that evening, the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of amber and violet.
In the master suite, the gaudy white leather furniture was gone, replaced once again by the elegant, dark mahogany antiques that Evelyn’s grandmother had cherished. The scent of lavender and old paper filled the air.
Lily sat propped up in her luxurious velvet bed, wearing clean pajamas embroidered with little silver stars. Her knees were gently bandaged, and the dark shadows under her eyes had begun to fade, replaced by a soft, relaxed expression.
Evelyn sat on the edge of the mattress, running her fingers gently through her daughter's hair.
"Mommy," Lily whispered, her large emerald eyes—so similar to Evelyn's own—looking up with innocent awe. "Are you going to go away again? Are the bad men going to come back?"
Evelyn felt a sharp pang in her chest, but she smiled, leaning down to press her forehead against Lily's.
"Never again, my sweet bird," Evelyn promised fiercely, her voice steady and absolute. "My mission is permanently over. From now on, my only mission is right here, keeping you safe and happy."
May you like
Lily smiled, a bright, beautiful grin that reached her eyes for the first time in over a year. She wrapped her small arms around Evelyn's neck, sighing happily. "I love you, Mommy."
"I love you too, my little warrior," Evelyn whispered, holding her tight as the stars began to twinkle outside the tall glass windows, marking the true dawn of their new life.
