Chapter 15 - The Second-Floor Infiltration

Back at the Valerius Estate, the rain drummed heavily against the reinforced glass windows of the grand mansion. Inside the nursery, the air was warm and smelled faintly of lavender and oil paints.

Seven-year-old Lily was fast asleep in her velvet bed, clutching a stuffed rabbit her mother had given her. She shifted slightly, murmuring softly in her dream.

Suddenly, the smart-home control panel near the door flickered from a calm blue light to a blinking amber warning.

Bypass detected. Sub-network breach.

The shadow detached itself from the hallway darkness, slipping silently into the room. It was a hired mercenary—a stealth operative wearing a thermal-optic camouflage suit, carrying a chemical sedative pad. The operative crept toward Lily's bed, raising the pad slowly toward the sleeping child's face.

Before the pad could touch Lily’s skin, the nursery door silently swung wider.

Standing in the doorway wasn't a frightened child or a sleeping servant. It was an automated security drone, disguised as an antique wall sconce, which instantly locked its high-intensity strobe light directly onto the intruder's eyes.

“Intuder alert. Defensive protocol engaged,” a cool, synthetic voice chimed from the ceiling.

The operative cursed, spinning around to fire his weapon at the camera, but a heavy mahogany chair—hurled with terrifying precision from the hallway—slammed into his chest, knocking him flat onto the hardwood floor.

Standing in the doorway, wearing her traveling wool coat with her sleeves rolled up, was Evelyn.

She hadn't stayed in Bangkok. The moment Viktor had threatened her home, Evelyn had executed a multi-vector extraction, leaving her decoy tactical clone in the warehouse while she deployed her private supersonic jet back across continents in record time.

The mercenary scrambled to his feet, drawing a tactical knife. "You're supposed to be in Thailand—!"

"I always check my perimeter twice," Evelyn interrupted coldly.

In a blur of motion, she closed the distance, ducked beneath a wild knife swipe, and delivered a devastating palm-strike to the operative's throat. He dropped instantly, unconscious before his boots hit the floor.

Evelyn didn't even breathe heavily. She walked over to Lily's bed, gently checking the child's pulse. Lily stirred, opening her eyes sleepily and looking up.

"Mommy? Are you back from your trip?" Lily whispered, rubbing her eyes.

Evelyn smiled softly, her fierce, lethal aura melting away instantly as she kissed Lily's forehead. "I'm right here, my sweet bird. Go back to sleep. Everything is safe."

Once Lily drifted back off, Evelyn stood up, her eyes turning back into cold emerald steel. She pulled out her encrypted satellite phone and dialed a direct line to international security command.

"This is Agent Ghost," Evelyn said into the comms, her voice cutting like glass. "Target Viktor Vance has breached territorial waters in Bangkok. Lock down all sector exits. I'm finishing this tonight."
