Chapter 9 - Secrets in the Static

"They are trying to gaslight the court," Ethan roared, pacing back and forth in Claire’s living room. He had spent the last two hours reviewing the court documents with a grim expression. "This is a psychological hit job. They are trying to use your past therapy sessions—which you went to because of Daniel's abuse—to paint you as an unstable, unfit mother."

Claire sat on the sofa, her arms wrapped tightly around her knees. She felt numb. The peace she had fought so hard to build over the last year felt like a fragile glass castle that had just been shattered by a single stone.

"How did they even get my therapy records?" Claire whispered. "Those are supposed to be confidential."

"Vivian has deep pockets, Claire. She probably hired a private investigator to dig into your therapist's billing records, or pressure the clinic," Ethan said, his jaw clenched. "We need our own legal representation. Someone who isn't afraid of Victoria Vance."

"We can't afford a lawyer like Victoria Vance, Ethan," Claire said, a tear escaping her eye and rolling down her cheek. "I’ve spent almost all my savings on the down payment for this cottage and the security upgrades. I’m barely getting by on my freelance income."

"I’ll pay for it," Ethan said without hesitation. "I’ll take out a second mortgage on my house. I don't care. We are not losing Maya."

Before Claire could protest, her phone buzzed on the coffee table.

It was an unknown number.

Claire’s breath hitched. She looked at Ethan, who nodded grimly. She swiped to answer and put it on speakerphone.

At first, there was only static. A low, rhythmic white noise that sounded like a long-distance connection.

"Hello?" Claire said, her voice trembling. "Who is this?"

"Claire," a voice whispered through the static.

It wasn't Vivian. And it wasn't Daniel.

It was a woman’s voice, raspy and breathless, sounding terrified.

"Who is this?" Claire demanded, her heart racing.

"Don't... don't trust the court documents," the woman whispered, her voice cracking. "They don't want visitation, Claire. They don't care about seeing Maya. It’s a distraction."

"What do you mean?" Claire asked, leaning closer to the phone. Ethan was already pulling out his own phone, tracing the call. "Who are you?"

"My name is... it doesn't matter," the woman sobbed. "I used to work for Grant Sterling’s investment firm. I saw what they did. The money they moved. Claire, they are completely broke. The estate in Oak Ridge? They didn't sell it to move money into a dark pool. They sold it because they were facing bankruptcy. The federal government is quiet-investigating Grant for a massive Ponzi scheme."

Claire’s eyes widened. "If they are broke, why are they spending millions on a custody lawyer like Victoria Vance?"

"Because of the legacy trust," the woman gasped. "Grant’s late uncle left a fifty-million-dollar trust fund. It’s locked up. The terms of the trust are incredibly specific. The money can only be released to the legal guardian of the firstborn grandchild of the next generation—which is Maya. But there’s a clause... if the child is in the sole custody of someone outside the Sterling family, the entire trust is dissolved and donated to charity. If they lose custody of Maya permanently, they lose access to the fifty million dollars. They need physical custody of her to unlock the trust and save themselves from prison."

The line crackled violently.

"They are desperate, Claire," the woman warned, her voice fading. "If the legal route fails... they will take her by force. They have already hired—"

Suddenly, a loud, metallic screech echoed through the phone, followed by the abrupt sound of the call disconnecting.

"Hello? Hello!" Claire cried into the phone, but there was only a dial tone.

She looked up at Ethan, her face completely pale. "It was never about love. It was never about family pride. It was always about the money."

Ethan stared at his phone, his expression grim. "The call came from a burner phone. I couldn't trace the exact location, but the cell tower it pinged is in downtown Chicago. Claire... if what she said is true, we aren't just fighting an angry ex-family. We are fighting desperate criminals who are facing total ruin."
