Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips at the Hospital

The sterile smell of the hospital was the sweetest thing Claire had breathed in years.

"Her core temperature was dangerously high, and she was severely dehydrated," the doctor explained, checking the monitors. "But the baby’s heart rate is stabilizing. You got her here just in time."

Claire lay in the private wing of the hospital, Ethan standing guard by the door like a sentinel. The peaceful silence, however, did not last long.

The door swung open, and Daniel walked in, flanked by Vivian and Grant. The smug arrogance Daniel usually wore was gone, replaced by a tense, nervous energy. He had realized, perhaps for the first time, that he had crossed a line he couldn't easily erase.

"Claire, darling," Vivian began, her voice dripping with fake, honeyed concern. "Thank goodness you're okay. We were so worried! The heat out there today was just unprecedented."

"Get out," Claire said. Her voice was quiet, but it possessed a steel strength she hadn't used in years.

"Claire, let's not be hasty," Daniel said, trying to step closer to the bed. "Your brother’s men attacked our home. They damaged the lawn! We need to present a united front to the police. It was just a misunderstanding. You slipped."

"A misunderstanding?" Ethan stepped forward, his massive frame blocking Daniel. He pulled out a tablet and tapped the screen.

A high-definition video began to play. It was the feed from the smart-home security camera Ethan had secretly installed in the backyard birdhouse months ago, knowing Daniel’s abusive tendencies. The video showed everything: Claire begging for help, Daniel locking the door, Vivian pointing and laughing, and Grant raising his glass while Claire collapsed onto the scorching stone.

"This is private footage! You can't use this!" Grant stammered, his face turning a deep, angry red.

"Actually, I can," Ethan replied calmly. "And so can the district attorney. Along with the hospital records of Claire’s heatstroke, and the logs of her emergency GPS beacon. We’re filing for a protective order today."

Daniel’s eyes widened with panic. "Claire, you wouldn't. Think of my career! Think of your child’s future! You need my family's money."

Claire looked at her husband—the man she had once loved, the man who had slowly chipped away at her soul until she felt like a ghost in her own life.

"I don't need your money, Daniel," Claire said, looking him dead in the eye. "And my daughter will never, ever know what it’s like to be locked out in the cold by the people who are supposed to love her. Get out of my sight."
