Chapter 5 - Labor and Liberation

Three weeks later, in the quiet, cool hours of a rainy August morning, Claire’s water broke.

Unlike the terrifying, lonely experience she had feared, she was surrounded by a wall of love. Ethan drove her to the hospital, his usual stoic expression replaced by a nervous, frantic energy that actually made Claire laugh between contractions.

"Are we going too fast? Do you need me to run a red light?" Ethan asked, gripping the steering wheel.

"Ethan, we are fine. Just drive," Claire laughed, holding his hand.

While Claire was in the delivery room, Daniel’s lawyer desperately called, begging for Daniel to be allowed into the hospital to witness the birth of his child, claiming it would "help rehabilitate his image" for his upcoming court date.

Ethan took the phone from Sophia. "Tell your client that if he steps within 500 yards of this hospital, my men won't wait for the police to remove him." He hung up.

At 6:14 a.m., after hours of intense labor, a sharp, healthy cry filled the delivery room.

The doctor placed a beautiful baby girl with a thick tuft of dark hair onto Claire’s chest. Claire broke down, tears of pure, unadulterated relief streaming down her face.

"She’s perfect, Claire," Ethan whispered, his eyes misting over as he looked at his new niece.

"Her name is Maya," Claire whispered, kissing the baby’s soft forehead. "It means 'water.' Because she survived the fire."

Outside, the rain washed away the dust and heat of the summer, bringing a cool, fresh autumn breeze. For the first time in years, Claire could breathe deeply.
