Chapter 13 - The Fire in the Woods

The wooden door splintered inward, crashing to the floor of the cabin with a deafening thud that seemed to shake the very foundations of the old structure.

Daniel stood in the doorway, framed by the jagged arcs of lightning illuminating the forest behind him. He was unrecognizable. The polished, arrogant corporate financier Claire had been forced to call her husband for three agonizing years was entirely gone. In his place stood a trembling, sweat-slicked specter of desperation. His hair was plastered to his forehead, his expensive designer jacket torn and caked in mud, and his eyes—wide, bloodshot, and wild—focused entirely on Claire.

"You took everything!" Daniel roared, his voice cracking with a terrifying mixture of grief and homicidal fury. He clutched a heavy, rusted iron crowbar in his right hand, his knuckles white. "My name, my career, my family, my money... you dragged us all into the dirt!"

"Daniel, drop the weapon!" Ethan shouted, stepping between his sister and the madman. He held Rebecca's small handgun with both hands, his arms steady despite the adrenaline surging through his veins. "It’s over, Daniel. The FBI just raided your parents' safehouse. Vivian and Grant are in custody. Maya is safe. If you take one more step, I will shoot you!"

For a fraction of a second, the words seemed to penetrate Daniel's mania. He blinked, his gaze flickering. "No... no, you're lying. My mother... she had a plan. She always has a plan. We were going to get the trust. We were going to get the money and leave this miserable country!"

"She failed, Daniel," Claire said, her voice remarkably calm, though her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She stepped out from behind Ethan, refusing to hide anymore. "She lost. Your father lost. And if you don't lay down that crowbar, you're going to lose the only thing you have left: your life."

"If I'm going down, Claire, you're coming with me!"

With a guttural scream, Daniel lunged forward. He didn't care about the gun. He didn't care about survival. He was a cornered beast seeking absolute destruction.

BANG!

The gunshot exploded inside the small cabin, the sound deafening in the enclosed space. Ethan had fired, but the darkness and Daniel's sudden, erratic movement caused the bullet to miss its mark, embedding itself deep into the log wall.

Daniel slammed his weight into Ethan, throwing him backward against the wooden dining table. The small oil lamp on the table wobbled and crashed to the floor, shattering instantly. The flame caught the pool of spilled kerosene, and within seconds, a hungry wall of orange fire erupted, licking up the dry wooden walls of the cabin.

"Ethan!" Claire screamed.

Through the rising smoke and growing flames, she saw Daniel wrestle the gun from Ethan's grasp, tossing it into the spreading fire. He raised the iron crowbar, aiming it directly at Ethan’s head.

Without thinking, driven by a primal urge to protect her brother, Claire grabbed a heavy ceramic pitcher from the kitchen counter and lunged forward. With all the strength she possessed, she smashed it against the side of Daniel’s head.

The pitcher shattered into a hundred pieces. Daniel groaned, stumbling backward, his grip on the crowbar loosening.

"Ethan, get up! We have to go!" Claire pulled her brother up by his jacket.

Smoke was rapidly filling the cabin, thick, black, and suffocating. Rebecca Vance was already scrambling out of a back window, clutching her duffel bag of evidence. Julian Vance was trying to save his laptop, but the flames were spreading too quickly.

"Leave it, Julian! Get out!" Ethan coughed, his face smudged with soot.

They scrambled toward the broken front door, but as they reached the threshold, a hand clamped around Claire’s ankle like a steel vice.

She screamed, looking down. Daniel was on the floor, his face covered in blood and soot, his eyes burning with a demonic intensity. He was dragging her backward into the blazing inferno of the cabin.

"If I burn, we burn together, Claire!" he hissed, his teeth stained red.

"Let her go!" Ethan turned back, but the smoke was so thick he could barely see.

Claire kicked out with her free leg, her heavy boot connecting directly with Daniel’s broken nose. He cried out, his grip slipping just enough for Claire to pull her leg free. Ethan grabbed her hands, hauling her out onto the rain-slicked porch just as a massive wooden ceiling beam collapsed inside, sealing the doorway with a roaring wall of fire.

Claire collapsed onto the wet grass, coughing violently, her lungs burning. She looked back at the cabin. It was fully engulfed in flames, a beacon of destruction in the dark, stormy night.

"Daniel..." she gasped, staring at the blazing doorway.

"He didn't come out," Julian whispered, his face pale as he watched the fire.

The rain poured down, but it did nothing to quench the fury of the blaze. Claire lay on the ground, holding her brother, the terrifying realization washing over her that while Maya was safe, the nightmare of the Sterling family was far from over.
