Chapter 10 - The Sterling Legacy

The revelation of the fifty-million-dollar legacy trust changed everything. It was the missing piece of the puzzle, the dark truth that explained Vivian and Grant’s obsessive, relentless pursuit of Maya.

The next morning, Ethan arranged a secret meeting with Julian Vance—a brilliant, rogue investigative journalist who had spent years exposing corporate corruption. Despite his last name, he was not related to Victoria Vance; in fact, he despised the high-priced attorney and had previously written an expose on her unethical tactics.

They met in a secluded corner of a quiet library on the outskirts of the city. Julian was a man in his late thirties with sharp, observant eyes and a messy mop of dark hair. He listened intently as Claire and Ethan explained the phone call and the details of the Sterling family's financial desperation.

"It makes perfect sense," Julian said, tapping his pen against a leather-bound notebook. "I’ve been tracking Grant Sterling’s investment firm, Sterling & Sons, for the last six months. On paper, they look incredibly wealthy. But my sources in the SEC tell me that their primary investment fund is a house of cards. They’ve been using new investor money to pay off older investors. It’s a classic Ponzi scheme, and it’s about to collapse."

"Can we use this in court?" Claire asked, hope flaring in her chest. "If we prove they are under federal investigation, the judge won't grant them visitation, let alone custody!"

"Not yet," Julian said grimly. "The SEC investigation is highly confidential. If we bring it up in court without hard evidence, Victoria Vance will have it thrown out as speculative slander. She’ll use it to further paint you as paranoid and unstable."

"So what do we do?" Ethan asked, his fists clenched on the table. "We can't just sit here and wait for them to drag Claire into court next week."

"We need to find the whistleblower," Julian said, looking at Claire. "The woman who called you. Did she give you any hints about her identity?"

Claire closed her eyes, trying to recall every detail of the panicked phone call. "She said she used to work for Grant's firm. She said she saw the money they moved. And she sounded... terrified. Like she was running."

Julian’s eyes lit up. "A year ago, Grant’s chief financial officer, a woman named Rebecca Vance—no relation to Victoria, funny enough—suddenly resigned and vanished from the public eye. The firm claimed she took an early retirement, but there were rumors she had discovered something highly illegal."

"If Rebecca has the financial documents proving the fraud, and proving the existence of the trust fund clause, we can destroy the Sterlings’ case completely," Ethan said.

"I’ll find her," Julian promised, standing up and gathering his notes. "But in the meantime, Claire, you need to be extremely careful. If the Sterlings realize that their legal avenue is failing, or that someone is digging into their finances, they will become desperate. And desperate people do desperate things."

As Claire and Ethan drove back to the cottage, the weight of Julian’s warning hung heavily in the air.

When they arrived, Claire walked to the front door, reaching into her purse for her keys. But as she stepped onto the porch, she stopped dead in her tracks.

The front door was slightly ajar.

The heavy, reinforced smart-lock Ethan had installed was completely shattered, the wood around the frame splintered as if it had been struck by a crowbar.

"Ethan," Claire whispered, her voice trembling as she grabbed his arm.

Ethan immediately pulled her behind him, his hand reaching into his jacket for the pepper spray he had started carrying. "Stay here. Call the police."

"No, Ethan, don't go in there!" Claire pleaded, but Ethan was already pushing the door open, stepping into the quiet house.

Claire’s heart hammered against her ribs as she pulled out her phone and dialed 911. But before the operator could answer, she heard Ethan call out from inside the house.

"Claire... you need to see this."

With shaking legs, Claire stepped into her home.

The living room was completely untouched. Nothing was stolen. The television, her laptop, her jewelry—everything was exactly where she had left it.

But painted in large, dripping red letters across the pristine white wall above her fireplace was a single, chilling word:

YIELD.

Resting on the floor directly beneath the terrifying message was Maya’s giant stuffed bear.

Its plush head had been completely severed from its body.
