Chapter 17 - The Final Hour

The fallout of the raid on the apartment was catastrophic for the Sterling empire.
Victoria Vance was arrested and charged with conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and attempted kidnapping. With her legal shield destroyed, the federal government moved in on Vivian Sterling’s medical clinic in Long Island.
By noon the next day, Vivian was transferred from her luxury hospital bed to a high-security ward at the federal detention center. Her ankle monitor was replaced with heavy steel handcuffs.
Claire sat in the visitation room of the prison, separated from Vivian by a thick pane of bulletproof glass. She had insisted on this meeting. She needed to look the monster in the eyes one last time to truly be free.
Vivian sat on the other side of the glass. She no longer looked like the elegant, untouchable matriarch of Oak Ridge. She wore a drab orange jumpsuit, her hair was white and unstyled, and her face was lined with the heavy, undeniable toll of her defeat.
But her eyes—those cold, gray eyes—still burned with a quiet, venomous hatred.
"You look proud of yourself, Claire," Vivian said, her voice crackling through the intercom. "You think you’ve won. You think a girl from the suburbs can destroy a legacy like ours."
"Your legacy is built on lies, Vivian," Claire said, her voice calm, steady, and utterly devoid of fear. "You stole from innocent people. You abused your son until he became a monster. And you tried to steal my daughter to save your own skin."
"Daniel was weak," Vivian sneered, her lip curling. "He let his emotions get the better of him. He let you get the better of him. If he had just listened to me, we would be in Switzerland right now, with fifty million dollars in our accounts."
"He's dead, Vivian," Claire said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Your only son is dead because of your greed. Does that mean nothing to you?"
For a fraction of a second, Claire saw a flicker of genuine pain cross Vivian's face. But it was quickly replaced by a mask of cold, unyielding pride.
"He died protecting our family name," Vivian said. "And as long as I draw breath, Claire, I will find a way to take that child from you. You cannot keep her hidden forever. Money always finds a way."
"You don't have any money left, Vivian," Claire said, leaning closer to the glass. "The federal government has seized every single offshore account. The fifty-million-dollar trust fund has been officially dissolved under the fraud clause and is being distributed to the victims of your husband’s Ponzi scheme. You are broke. You are alone. And you are going to die in this prison."
Vivian stared at her, her jaw tightening. For the first time, she had no retort. The reality of her absolute ruin was finally sinking in.
Claire stood up, picking up her purse. She looked down at the woman who had terrorized her for years, and felt nothing but pity.

"Goodbye, Vivian," Claire said.
She turned on her heel and walked out of the visitation room, leaving the matriarch of the Sterling family sitting in the cold, silent dark of her own making.
