Chapter 14 - The Embers of Deceit

Three days later, the rain had stopped, leaving the ruins of the upstate New York cabin a charred, smoldering pile of black wood and ash.

Claire sat in a sterile, brightly lit waiting room at the Federal Building in downtown Manhattan. She was holding Maya tightly in her arms. The baby was blissfully unaware of the horrors that had unfolded, humming happily as she played with a small plastic ring. Claire couldn't stop kissing her daughter’s forehead, her hands still trembling slightly.

Ethan sat beside her, his forehead bandaged from his struggle with Daniel.

"The FBI confirmed it," Ethan said quietly, leaning closer so only Claire could hear. "They found human remains in the ruins of the cabin. The dental records match Daniel's. He’s gone, Claire. For real this time."

Claire closed her eyes, expecting to feel a wave of relief. Instead, she felt a hollow, lingering coldness. Daniel was dead, but the poison he and his family had injected into her life still lingered.

The heavy oak door at the end of the hall opened, and Special Agent Marcus Vance—a stern, sharp-eyed federal investigator who had been leading the case against Grant Sterling—walked out. He signaled for Claire and Ethan to enter his office.

"Miss Avery," Agent Vance said, offering her a chair. "First, let me apologize for the breakdown in security. We didn't realize how deep the rot in your brother’s security firm went. Grant Sterling had paid off several key officers weeks before we even initiated our raid."

"Is my daughter safe now?" Claire asked, her voice steady but demanding. "Are they locked away?"

Agent Vance sighed, sitting behind his desk and rubbing his temples. "Grant Sterling is currently being held without bail at a federal holding facility. The evidence Rebecca Vance provided was a goldmine. It details a Ponzi scheme totaling over eighty million dollars. But... we have a problem regarding Vivian."

Claire's heart dropped. "What do you mean? You arrested her. I saw it on the phone!"

"We did," Vance admitted. "But Vivian’s high-priced legal team, led by Victoria Vance, is already exploiting every loophole in the book. They are claiming that Vivian had no active role in Grant’s financial fraud, and that her actions regarding your daughter were not a kidnapping, but a 'welfare check' to protect her grandchild from what she alleges is your unstable, violent environment. Because the physical custody papers were still technically in limbo due to the pending grandparent visitation petition, they are arguing she didn't violate federal kidnapping statutes."

"She paid off my guards!" Claire protested, her voice rising in disbelief. "She threatened my child’s life on a recorded video call!"

"The defense is arguing that the recording is inadmissible because it was obtained illegally without a warrant, and that Vivian was acting under extreme emotional duress, believing you were putting Maya in danger by running off to New York," Agent Vance explained, his tone laced with professional frustration. "Worse yet, Vivian has filed for medical bail. She claims she suffered a severe cardiac event during the arrest. A judge just granted her house arrest with an ankle monitor at a private medical clinic in Long Island."

"She’s going to get away with it," Ethan said, his fists clenching. "She’s going to use her money to buy her way out of prison."

"Not if we can prove she knew about the Ponzi scheme and actively laundered the money through her charity foundations," Vance said. "We need the encryption key to the secondary ledger. Rebecca Vance doesn't have it. She says only two people knew the key: Grant... and Daniel."

Claire felt a cold dread settle in her stomach. Daniel was dead. If the encryption key died with him, Vivian might walk free.

Suddenly, Claire’s phone buzzed in her pocket. It was a private number.

She answered, expecting it to be Julian or their lawyer.

Instead, a chillingly familiar, elegant voice spoke through the speaker, dripping with condescension and venom.

"You think you won, Claire?" Vivian whispered, her voice weak but sharp as a razor. "You killed my son. You took my family’s future. But I promise you, before this month is over, I will take everything you have left. I will see you in the ground, and Maya will be raised by someone who actually deserves the Sterling name."

May you like

The line went dead.

Claire stared at her phone, her knuckles turning white. Vivian wasn't defeated. Even from a hospital bed, bound by an ankle monitor, the matriarch was still pulling the strings.
