Chapter 1 - The Breach

The second vibration against Claire’s thigh was not a status update. It was a coded response from Sentinel Ridge’s automated dispatch: Intercept team en route. ETA 4 minutes.

Through the double-paned glass, Daniel’s face shifted from annoyance to mild irritation. He didn't rush to open the door. Instead, he took a slow sip of his iced tea, gestured toward the grill, and said something to his mother that made her chuckle.

But Claire didn't hear it. The world was spinning into a dark, suffocating vortex of gray heat and sizzling asphalt. When her knees hit the scorching patio stone, the pain barely registered. She collapsed onto her side, her cheek pressed against the burning brick, her hands instinctively wrapping around her pregnant belly to shield her unborn baby.

"Daniel, she’s actually down," Grant said, his voice barely carrying through the glass pane. "Get her up before the neighbors see. It looks bad."

Daniel finally unlocked the door, stepping out into the oppressive heat with an exasperated sigh. "Claire, get up. This is embarrassing. The burgers are burning, and—"

He never finished the sentence.

The quiet suburb of Oak Ridge was suddenly shattered by the screech of heavy-duty tires. Before Daniel could even reach Claire’s limp body, a black, unmarked security SUV slammed onto the driveway, tearing across the manicured lawn. Another roared up from the opposite side, blocking the entrance to the cul-de-sac.

Four men in tactical gear, carrying medical kits and wearing the distinctive silver mountain crest of Sentinel Ridge, breached the side gate in seconds.

At the front of the pack was Ethan.

"Step back from my sister!" Ethan’s voice cut through the heavy summer air like a blade.

Daniel stumbled backward, his face draining of color. "Ethan? What the hell is this? This is private property! You can't just—"

"I said, step back," Ethan growled, his hand resting on his tactical belt. Behind him, two elite guards immediately flanked Daniel, their presence massive and terrifyingly quiet.

"She fainted! She's just being dramatic!" Vivian shrieked from the kitchen doorway, her silver bracelets clinking frantically. "Get these thugs off our property!"

But Ethan wasn't listening. He fell to his knees beside Claire, his tough exterior instantly melting into raw panic. "Claire? Claire, can you hear me? I’ve got you. You’re safe."

Claire’s eyes fluttered open, her vision blurry, but she recognized the fierce, protective gaze of her brother. "Ethan..." she whispered, her lips cracked. "The baby..."

"The medics are here, sis. You're going to be okay. I promise you." Ethan scooped her up into his arms, ignoring the sweat and grill grease. He looked at Daniel, his eyes burning with a cold, calculated fury that made the younger man shrink. "If anything happens to her or my niece, Daniel... there won't be a corner of this earth where you can hide."
