Chapter 9: The Ultimate Deception

Chapter 9: The Ultimate Deception
The revelation hung in the cabin air like a toxic fog. Margaret stared at Victor, her hands shaking, the last remnants of her composure completely disintegrating.
"Sarah was weak," Margaret hissed, her voice dropping to a terrifying, manic whisper. "She was going to give him up for adoption! She didn't understand what Julian's money could do for us! When she died in that hospital room, I did what was necessary. I protected my future! I raised Daniel! I am his mother!"
"Legally, on paper, yes," Victor said, his eyes gleaming with malicious delight. "But biologically? No. And according to the strict terms of the Vance Trust, if the recipient is discovered to be a product of fraud, the entire 4.2 million dollars reverts instantly to the next of kin. Which means... it comes to me."
Margaret stood up, her claws practically coming out. "I didn't bring this to you so you could steal it from me, Victor!"
"Calm down, you fool," Victor snapped. "If I take the money, I will pay you your share under the table. But more importantly, this completely destroys Daniel. If he isn't your biological son, he has no legal claim to the Vance estate, his public credibility is ruined, and your criminal charges for assaulting 'your daughter-in-law' become a civil matter of an intruder in a house that he doesn't legally own."
The cruelty of the plan was exquisite. Victor immediately filed an emergency motion for a mandatory DNA paternity and maternity test, submitting the newly uncovered addendum to the family court judge.
The next morning, Daniel and Emma were in Evelyn Cross's office when the court notification arrived.
Evelyn looked at the document, her face turning pale. "Daniel... Victor Vance has filed a motion alleging that you are not Margaret’s biological son. He’s claiming your birth certificate was falsified by Margaret in 1992 to commit estate fraud."
Daniel laughed, a dry, hollow sound. "That’s ridiculous. She’s insane, Evelyn. She’s my mother. I look like her... don't I?" He turned to Emma, seeking confirmation, but his voice lacked conviction. He had his father's tall frame and dark hair, but his eyes... he had always been told his gray eyes came from a distant relative.
"We have to comply with the DNA test," Evelyn said quietly. "If we fight it, it looks like we’re hiding something. The judge has ordered an expedited swab today. The results will be delivered directly to the courtroom on Friday morning during the custody hearing."

Emma grabbed Daniel’s hand, finding it freezing cold. "It doesn't matter what the test says, Daniel. You are who you are. We are who we are."
But Daniel felt a profound, terrifying emptiness opening up beneath his feet. If Margaret wasn't his mother, then his entire life—every sacrifice, every insult, every ounce of guilt he had carried—was based on a lie so cosmic it defied comprehension.
