Chapter 7: Flipping the Script

The press conference was set up in the conference room of Evelyn Cross's high-rise law firm. The room was packed with journalists, attracted by the salacious headline of a hidden billionaire family scandal.

Margaret and Victor Vance watched the live broadcast from Victor's office, expecting a public relations disaster for Daniel.

Instead, Emma stepped up to the microphone first.

She didn't wear makeup to cover the bruise on her temple. She wore a simple, professional dress, her posture erect, her voice clear and resonant.

"My name is Emma Hayes," she began, looking directly into the camera lenses. "For months, I have been subjected to a systematic campaign of emotional and psychological abuse by my mother-in-law, Margaret Hayes. Two nights ago, that abuse turned into physical violence. Margaret Hayes entered my home, attacked me, slammed my head into my daughter's crib, and left bruises on my six-week-old baby girl."

A collective gasp echoed through the room of reporters. Flashbulbs went off rapidly.

Emma slid a large poster board forward, revealing high-definition photographs taken by the hospital forensics team: the severe bruising on her temple, the defensive scratches on her arms, and the tiny, heartbreaking finger-shaped bruises on baby Sophie’s arm.

"The narrative that my husband attacked his mother to steal an inheritance is a fabrication designed by a desperate woman trying to escape criminal charges," Emma continued, her voice filled with a mother's fierce rage. "My husband didn't attack anyone. He saved his family from a monster."

Daniel stepped up next, his presence commanding. He looked directly at the camera, addressing his mother directly.

"For thirty-four years, you told me we were poor because of your sacrifices," Daniel said, his voice vibrating with emotion. "You hid my father's identity, and you hid millions of dollars so you could keep me under your thumb. You weaponized guilt to control my life. But the truth is out now. I am claiming my father's legacy, and I am using every single dime of it to ensure you never face a free day again. We have filed formal charges for aggravated assault, child endangerment, and grand larceny for the forgery of my signature."

In his office, Victor Vance slammed his fist onto his desk, turning to a pale, sweating Margaret. "You told me there were no photos of the baby! You told me you barely touched them!"

"She's lying! They're doctoring the photos!" Margaret shrieked, but the panic in her voice was undeniable.

"The public sympathy just evaporated, Margaret," Victor snarled, grabbing his briefcase. "The DA is going to fast-track those criminal charges to avoid looking soft on domestic violence. We need to move to our backup plan immediately. We need to find the one secret that will invalidate Daniel's claim to the trust completely."
