Chapter 8: The Shadow of the Past
The public relations victory was massive. Overnight, the internet rallied behind Daniel and Emma. The hashtags #JusticeForSophie and #ProtectTheHayes Family trended globally. The reporters outside their house vanished, replaced by an outpouring of community support, flowers, and letters of encouragement.
But inside the house, the atmosphere remained tense. Daniel knew his mother wouldn't sit quietly in a corner. A lifetime of dealing with her manipulations taught him that she was most dangerous when she was cornered.
Evelyn Cross arrived at their house that evening with a bittersweet update. "The DA has officially issued an arrest warrant for Margaret for felony assault and child abuse. But she’s gone into hiding. She wasn't at her apartment, and her phone has been turned off."
"She’s with Victor Vance," Daniel said grimly. "He has safe houses all over the state."
"Let the police handle the search," Emma said, hugging Daniel from behind. "We have to focus on the custody hearing on Friday. If the judge dismisses her petition, she can never legally touch Sophie again."
While they prepared for court, Victor and Margaret were holed up in a private estate cabin hours away from the city. Victor was reviewing the original 1992 trust agreement signed by his late uncle, Julian Vance, looking through every line with a magnifying glass.
"There has to be a clause," Victor muttered, his eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep. "A morality clause, a legitimacy clause... something."
Margaret sat by the fireplace, drinking tea, her face cold. "There is no clause about behavior, Victor. Julian wanted to ensure his son was taken care of. He loved me, in his own twisted way."
Victor stopped turning the pages. His eyes narrowed as he stared at a specific addendum at the very back of the document—a clause that had been sealed by a court order three decades ago.
"Margaret..." Victor said slowly, a sinister smile creeping back onto his face. "Did you introduce Julian Vance to your sister, Sarah, back in 1991?"
Margaret’s tea cup shattered against the hearth. The liquid splashed across the stone, but she didn't notice. Her face became a mask of absolute terror.

"How do you know about Sarah?" she whispered.
"Because this addendum states that the trust is valid only if the child, Daniel, is the biological offspring of Margaret Hayes," Victor whispered, his voice dripping with malice. "But according to these medical cross-references from the fertility clinic Julian used... you weren't the one who carried the pregnancy. Sarah was. You stole your sister’s baby after she died in childbirth, forged the birth certificate, and claimed the Vance fortune for yourself."
