Chapter 12: Broken Chains

Chapter 12: Broken Chains
The courtroom erupted into chaos.
"No! This is a mistake! The money is mine!" Margaret shrieked as two armed bailiffs stepped forward, grabbing her arms. She thrashed against them, her elegant facade completely disintegrating into madness. "I raised him! I broke my back for him! Daniel, tell them! Tell them I’m your mother!"
Daniel stood up slowly, looking at the screaming woman being dragged toward the holding cells. For the first time in his life, he didn't feel anger. He didn't feel guilt. He felt absolutely nothing. She was a stranger who had stolen him from a mother who might have actually loved him.
"Goodbye, Margaret," Daniel said quietly.
Victor Vance was backing away toward the door, realizing his plan had completely backfired. Not only was the trust completely valid for Daniel, but Victor had just legally proven Daniel’s absolute right to the entire Vance estate as the sole surviving biological heir of Julian Vance.
"Mr. Vance," Judge Reynolds called out, stopping him in his tracks. "Do not leave the city. The District Attorney will likely have questions for you regarding your complicity in hiding a fugitive and attempting to extort a legal estate."
Outside the courtroom, the media was waiting, but Evelyn Cross led Daniel and Emma through a private basement exit.
When they got into the back of Evelyn’s SUV, the silence was broken only by the sound of Daniel’s uneven breathing. He looked out the window as the courthouse receded into the distance.
"Sarah," Daniel whispered, the name unfamiliar on his tongue. "My mother's name was Sarah."
Emma wrapped her arms around him, burying her face in his neck. "She loved you, Daniel. She wanted you. And now we can finally find out who she really was."
"You are a very wealthy man, Daniel," Evelyn said from the front seat. "The Vance corporation cannot touch you now. The 4.2 million is yours, and with the biological paternity fully established, you have a claim to a significant portion of Julian Vance's remaining commercial real estate empire. You can build whatever life you want for Emma and Sophie. No one can ever hold a debt over your head again."

Daniel looked down at Emma, then at his phone, where his sister-in-law had sent a video of baby Sophie sleeping peacefully in her crib.
"I don't care about the empire," Daniel said, his voice firming up, the strength returning to his eyes. "I care about building a wall around my family so high that the shadows of the past can never climb over it."
