Chapter 14: The Shadow in the Mirror
The security system at Daniel and Emma’s house was state-of-the-art, but human malice always finds a flaw.
It was a Tuesday evening. Daniel was at a meeting with Arthur Pendelton and Evelyn Cross, finalizing the paperwork to officially assume his position as the primary shareholder of the Vance Estate. Emma was home alone with Sophie, enjoying the quiet warmth of the living room.
The baby was sleeping in her bassinet when the power suddenly cut out.
The house went pitch black. The electronic cameras went dark, and the backup generator, which should have kicked in instantly, remained silent. Someone had manually cut the primary power lines and jammed the auxiliary battery systems from the external breaker box outside.
Emma’s heart immediately leapt into her throat. "Daniel?" she called out instinctively, though she knew he wasn't home yet.
She rushed to the bassinet, grabbing Sophie into her arms. Her phone had no service—a signal jammer was active nearby. The sheer terror of the situation paralyzed her for a second before her mother’s instinct took over. She needed to get to the safe room Daniel had reinforced in the master closet.
As she turned toward the stairs, the sound of shattered glass echoed from the kitchen.
Footsteps—heavy, deliberate—entered the house.
Emma ran up the stairs, holding her breath, trying to keep Sophie quiet. She slipped into the master bedroom, locking the door behind her, and hurried into the walk-in closet, pulling the heavy, reinforced wooden door shut and sliding the iron deadbolt into place.
In the dark, she held Sophie tight against her chest, listening to the footsteps ascending the stairs.
The master bedroom door was kicked open with a violent splintering sound.
"Emma..." a voice called out. It wasn't Margaret. It was a man's voice—rough, unfamiliar, hired help. "We know you’re in here. Make this easy. Mr. Vance just wants to talk."
Emma squeezed her eyes shut, tears streaming down her face. She reached into her pocket, remembering that Daniel had insisted she carry a standalone, satellite-linked emergency panic button she could press if the standard cellular network ever failed.
With shaking fingers, she found the device and pressed the red button twice.

Miles away, in the middle of his legal meeting, an alarm blared on Daniel’s phone. A bright red notification flashed across the screen: CRITICAL ALERT: EMMA PANIC BUTTON ACTIVATED. LOCATION: HOME SATELLITE.
Daniel stood up so fast his chair flipped backward. "Emma," he gasped, his face turning ghostly white. He didn't say another word. He sprinted out of the conference room, leaving Evelyn and Arthur staring in shock.
