Chapter 17: Rebuilding from the Ashes

A week after the home invasion, the dust finally settled. The Vance Corporation board of directors held an emergency meeting, voting unanimously to strip Victor Vance of all titles and formally welcome Daniel Hayes as the majority shareholder and new Chairman of the Board.

Daniel sat at the head of the massive mahogany table in the skyscraper downtown—the very room where his biological father, Julian Vance, had once ruled. But Daniel didn't care about power.

"My first act as Chairman," Daniel announced to the board, his voice steady and resolute, "is to liquidate forty percent of the company’s commercial real estate holdings. We are transferring those funds into a newly established global foundation: The Sarah Hayes Foundation for Victims of Domestic Abuse and Child Trafficking."

The board members nodded in respectful silence. No one dared oppose him.

When Daniel returned home that evening, he didn't go back to the house that had been invaded. Using a small portion of his inheritance, he had purchased a beautiful, sunlit estate surrounded by acres of private, secure land, nestled in a quiet valley where the only sound was the wind through the trees.

Emma was sitting on the back porch, watching the sunset, holding a healthy, smiling Sophie. The bruises on Emma’s face had healed, leaving behind a countenance that was stronger, more radiant, and completely at peace.

Daniel walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, kissing her shoulder. "The foundation is official, Emma. Your name is on the board of directors. We’re going to help thousands of women and children escape the kind of prison Margaret built."

Emma leaned back against him, a deep sigh of relief escaping her chest. "She can never hurt anyone again, Daniel. We won."

"We did," Daniel whispered.
