Chapter 16: Retribution and Justice
Daniel saw the hooded figure rushing down the stairs holding Emma’s bag. The rage that exploded within him was primal, primal and absolute. He didn't wait for the police. He lunged forward, tackling the intruder to the hardwood floor of the entryway.
The two men crashed into the banister. The intruder swung a fist, striking Daniel’s jaw, but Daniel didn't even flinch. He pinned the man down, his massive hands gripping the collar of his jacket, slamming his head against the floor until the man went limp.
"Where is she?!" Daniel roared, his eyes wild. "Where is my wife?!"
"Daniel!" Emma’s voice cracked from the top of the stairs.
Daniel looked up. Emma was leaning against the railing, her lip bleeding, but she was standing. She held Sophie safely in her arms.
Daniel left the unconscious intruder on the floor as three police officers burst through the front door with guns drawn. He bounded up the stairs three steps at a time, throwing his arms around his wife and child, pulling them into a embrace so tight it felt as if he were trying to fuse their bodies together.
"I’ve got you," Daniel sobbed into Emma’s hair. "I’ve got you. You’re safe."
The intruder was cuffed and dragged away. Within an hour, under the intense interrogation of the detectives, the criminal broke. He confessed that he was hired directly by an intermediary working for Victor Vance, and that the goal was to kidnap Emma to force Daniel to sign over his corporate voting rights.
The evidence was airtight. The conspiracy was fully exposed.
