Chapter 13: The True Mother's Legacy

Chapter 13: The True Mother's Legacy

With Margaret behind bars, held without bail due to the severity of the charges and the flight risk, Daniel began the journey of discovering his true history.

Through Arthur Pendelton's archived files, Daniel tracked down the resting place of his biological mother, Sarah Hayes. She was buried in a small, forgotten cemetery on the outskirts of the state, her headstone simple, paid for by a anonymous trust donation decades ago.

The next afternoon, Daniel and Emma stood before the modest stone. The inscription read simply: Sarah Hayes - Beloved Sister - Gone Too Soon.

"Margaret didn't even put 'Mother' on her stone," Daniel murmured, kneeling to clear away the overgrown weeds. "She wanted to erase Sarah completely so she could take her place."

"But she couldn't erase her blood," Emma said softly, placing a bouquet of white roses on the grave. "Look at Sophie, Daniel. She has Sarah’s chin. I saw an old photo of Sarah in the archive files. Your daughter carries her legacy."

Daniel placed his hand on the cold stone. "I’m sorry I didn't know you," he whispered, a tear finally escaping his eye—not a tear of guilt for Margaret, but of grief for Sarah. "But I will live a life that makes you proud. I promise."

As they walked back to their car, Daniel felt a profound shift within himself. The invisible chains that had dictated his choices, his anxieties, and his tolerance of abuse were completely gone. He was no longer the son of a tyrant; he was the son of a woman who had loved him enough to give her life for him.

However, the war wasn't entirely over.

In her jail cell, Margaret was visited by Victor Vance, who was desperate to save his own skin before the grand jury indictments dropped.

"Daniel is moving to claim the commercial shares of the Vance Corporation," Victor said through the plexiglass prison phone, his voice frantic. "If he takes the board seat, he will audit the books. He will see the millions I’ve skimmed over the last five years, Margaret. If I go down, I’m taking you with me."

Margaret’s eyes, sunken and dark against her orange jumpsuit, gleamed with an unholy light. "He hasn't taken the board seat yet, Victor. And there is still one way to stop him. A corporate clause from Julian’s time states that a board member must be free of active, unresolved litigation regarding their character. We don't need to win a custody battle anymore. We just need to ensure he is involved in a scandal so severe that the board forces him to sign away his voting rights."

"What are you thinking?" Victor asked, leaning closer.

"Emma," Margaret whispered, her voice venomous. "Daniel’s strength comes from her. If she disappears, he will fall apart. He will abandon the board, he will abandon the money, and he will do exactly what we want to get her back."
