Chapter 3 - Breaking and Entering the Sterling Archives

The next evening, a massive storm rolled over the city, providing the perfect cover. Clara knew that her father and Beatrice were attending an opera downtown, leaving the Sterling Estate mostly empty. Using her old security code, she slipped through the side conservatory door, accompanied by Julian.

Their target was Arthur's private study, where the family's historical banking ledgers were kept. The room smelled of old leather and expensive cigars. Julian went to work on the wall safe behind a portrait of the Sterling family patriarchs, while Clara kept watch at the door.

"Hurry, Julian," Clara whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. "The security guard makes his rounds every twenty minutes."

"Almost got it..." Julian muttered, his fingers deftly manipulating the dial. With a soft click, the heavy safe door swung open. Inside lay rows of legal documents, titles, and a velvet-lined box containing an antique brass key stamped with the number 1998.

Suddenly, the lights in the hallway flared to life. Footsteps echoed on the marble tiles outside. Clara’s blood ran cold as the door swung open to reveal Tiffany, her stepsister, holding a glass of wine and looking smug.

"Well, well, well," Tiffany sneered, pulling out her phone. "Look at the little thieves. Wait until Mom and Arthur hear about this. You're finally going to jail, Clara."
