Chapter 11 - The Echoes of the Gavel

The heavy oak doors of the federal courthouse slammed shut, but the echoing sound of the judge’s gavel still reverberated inside Clara’s mind. Outside, a tropical storm was brewing, throwing sheets of gray rain against the massive glass windows of her new executive vehicle. Across from her sat Julian, his laptop open, his fingers typing furiously as the digital stock tickers flashed across the screen.

"The Vanguard stock has stabilized, but the market is still volatile," Julian said, his eyes scanning the dense rows of financial data. "Arthur’s signature on the asset transfer is official, but we are already seeing resistance from the minor board members. They were loyal to the Sterling name for three decades. They won't just bow down to a twenty-eight-year-old woman because of a court order."

Clara looked out at the blurred city lights. Around her neck, the restored emerald pendant felt cold against her collarbone. "Let them resist, Julian. They think I am an accidental heiress who got lucky because of a hidden diary. They don't realize that for fifteen years, I watched Arthur and Beatrice operate from the shadows. I know every supplier they squeezed, every politician they bribed, and every loophole they exploited."

Just then, Clara’s private phone buzzed—a line only known to a handful of people. The screen displayed an encrypted number. She pressed answer and placed it to her ear.

"You think you’ve won the crown, Clara?" a raspy, weak voice whispered from the other end. It was Arthur. He was currently confined to a high-security medical wing under federal custody, awaiting his final relocation. "You only inherited the visible kingdom. You have no idea about the debts I owed to the people who actually built the Vanguard infrastructure. The necklace was just the first lock. You don't have the final key."

Before Clara could demand an explanation, the line went dead. She stared at the screen, a sudden chill creeping down her spine. Julian looked up, noticing the sudden change in her expression.

"What did he say?" Julian asked, his voice sharp with protective instinct.

"He said we only uncovered the surface," Clara murmured, clutching the emerald pendant tight. "Julian, we need to audit the private shipping logs from 1998 again. Not the ones we showed the court. The ones Arthur tried to burn."
