Chapter 14 - The Regulatory Trap

Two weeks later, just as Clara was preparing to launch the Eleanor Vanguard Foundationâs first international initiative, the hammer fell. The Federal Maritime Commission issued an emergency injunction, freezing all operations of the Vanguard shipping fleet.
The news spread like wildfire across social media. On Facebook, headlines screamed: Is the Vanguard Fortune Built on Lies? Feds Investigate Clara Vanguard for Corporate Fraud.
Clara sat in the boardroom, surrounded by an army of high-priced corporate defense lawyers who looked utterly defeated. The lead attorney, a senior partner named Sterling-loyalist Vance, laid out the grim reality.
"An anonymous whistleblower has provided the commission with documents showing that the original 1998 deeds you presented in court were masterfully forged," the lawyer explained. "Furthermore, there is a pending patent infringement lawsuit from Cross Industries claiming that Vanguardâs new autonomous shipping technology was stolen directly from their research labs."
"This is Beatrice's doing," Julian said, slamming his fist on the table. "She didn't act alone. She couldn't have pulled these regulatory levers from a prison cell. Someone with massive political capital is backing her."

"Victoria Cross," Clara said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register. She stood up, walking to the massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city port where her ships sat idle, costing the company millions every hour. "She wants to choke us financially until the board panics and forces a buyout. They think because they have the regulatory boards in their pocket, I will break."
She turned around, her eyes flashing with a terrifying brilliance. "Julian, it's time to play our wild card. We aren't going to fight this in their corrupt courtrooms. We are going to take this directly to the court of public opinion, and we are going to use the very weapon they used against my mother."
