Chapter 2 - The Cryptic Legacy

Safely locked inside her small apartment away from the suffocating Sterling Estate, Clara spread the fragments of the necklace across her desk. Using a magnifying glass, she studied the tiny note. The Vault. 1998. Not his.

What did it mean? Her mother, Eleanor, had passed away in a suspicious car accident in 2002 when Clara was just four years old. Shortly after, Arthur married Beatrice, who brought her own manipulative daughter, Tiffany, into the family. For years, Clara had been treated like a second-class citizen in her own home, stripped of her inheritance rights under the guise that she was "unstable."

Clara called Julian Vance, a brilliant private investigator and a childhood friend who had always seen through Beatrice’s sweet public persona. Within an hour, Julian arrived at her apartment, his sharp eyes taking in the broken jewelry.

"If Eleanor hid this inside a necklace she wore every day, it was her insurance policy," Julian said, his voice grave as he analyzed the note. "1998 was the year you were born, Clara. And 'The Vault' likely refers to the private safety deposit boxes at the old Swiss-Am Bank downtown, which your family has used for generations."

"We need to get in there," Clara said, her jaw clenched. "Beatrice destroyed this necklace tonight to humiliate me in front of high society. She has no idea she just handed me the key to her undoing."

"It won't be easy," Julian warned. "Arthur and Beatrice control the master access keys. We'll have to play a very dangerous game to get your hands on them."
