Chapter 1 - The Shattered Heirloom

The sound of shattering glass and snapping silver wire cut through the tense silence of the grand dining room. Clara stood frozen, her hands trembling as the vintage emerald pendant—the only physical memory she possessed of her late mother—scattered across the polished hardwood floor. Above her stood her glamorous, icy stepmother, Beatrice Sterling, holding an empty silver tray she had intentionally swung to "accientally" collide with Clara's neck.

"Oh, dear, how incredibly clumsy of me," Beatrice said, her voice dripping with artificial sympathy as she adjusted her diamond rings. "But then again, Clara, cheap trinkets belong in the trash anyway. It was an eyesore."

The guests at the elite charity gala gasped, murmuring behind their champagne flutes. Clara’s father, billionaire shipping magnate Arthur Sterling, looked on with a furrowed brow but said nothing, as usual shielding his wife from any accountability. Clara knelt down, her eyes stinging with tears as she gathered the broken pieces. But as she picked up the main emerald setting, she noticed something strange. The impact had cracked open a hidden compartment within the heavy gold backing.

A tiny, tightly rolled piece of micro-parchment fell into her palm. On it, written in her mother’s distinct, elegant cursive, were three words: The Vault. 1998. Not his.

Clara quickly pocketed the note, her sadness instantly evaporating into a cold, burning curiosity. She stood up, looked Beatrice dead in the eye, and whispered, "You think you just destroyed my past, Beatrice. In reality, you just shattered your own future." Without waiting for a response, Clara turned and walked out of the gala, leaving a suffocating silence behind her.
