Chapter 12 - The Ghost of Room 404

The investigation led them to an abandoned maritime archive facility at the edge of the industrial northern docks. The building was slated for demolition, its concrete walls covered in graffiti and damp with salt air. Armed with only heavy flashlights and Julian's tactical security gear, they bypassed the rusted chain-link fences and entered the dark, echoing structure.
"According to the old port records, the original paper logs of the Vanguard merger were transferred here right before my motherâs accident," Clara said, her voice echoing in the hollow hallway. "Arthur told the auditors they were destroyed in a localized fire, but I found a routing slip in his private desk that suggested otherwise."
They reached Room 404, a subterranean storage unit choked with dust and the smell of decaying paper. Hours blurred into one another as they systematically broke open rusted filing cabinets, searching through thousands of yellowed documents.
Suddenly, Julianâs flashlight beam illuminated a heavy, reinforced steel lockbox hidden behind a false drywall panel. It required a physical four-digit combination.
"Try 1998," Clara suggested, her breath catching in her throat.
Julian turned the dial: 1-9-9-8. A heavy mechanical click echoed through the room. The iron lid swung back, revealing not corporate ledgers, but a stack of photographic negatives and an old cassette tape labeled: Project Siren - October 2002.
Julian pulled a portable digital converter from his tactical pack, plugging the tape into the device. A grainy, audio recording filled the dark room. Through the heavy static, they heard Eleanorâs frantic voice, followed by the deep, unmistakable rumble of Arthurâs voice arguing violently aboard a moving vehicle.
"You can't do this, Arthur! The Vanguard shares belong to the child! If you sign that contract with the syndicate, you are selling her life away!" Eleanor screamed.
May you like
"She will never know, Eleanor! Because by tomorrow, the Vanguard name will cease to exist, and you won't be here to tell her!" Arthur roared.
The recording ended with the horrific, deafening sound of screeching tires and a massive metallic impact. Clara dropped to her knees, the flashlight slipping from her hand, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the dark. It wasn't a tragic car accident. It was a pre-meditated execution.
