Chapter 9: The New Player
Clara was reviewing the acquisition reports when Marcus brought in the news of the Whitlock shipping fleet sale.
"Ms. Mason, Julian Vance has bought out the Whitlocks’ shipping assets. He’s using them to create a new logistics network that directly competes with our trade routes in the north."
Clara’s eyes narrowed slightly. Julian Vance. She knew him by reputation. He was smart, aggressive, and lacked any moral compass.
"He thinks he bought a weapon," Clara said, standing up and walking to the floor-to-ceiling window. "But he actually just bought a sinking ship. Marcus, did Julian inspect the maintenance logs of those vessels?"
"I believe his team did a rushed audit due to the forty-eight-hour timeline," Marcus replied.
"Perfect," Clara smiled. "My father always said, never interrupt an enemy when they are making a mistake. The Whitlock fleet hasn't been upgraded to meet the new international environmental standards that go into effect next month. I know this because I helped draft those standards with the maritime committee."
She turned around. "Let Julian think he won this round. Let him pour his capital into upgrading those old ships. In thirty days, those vessels won't be allowed to leave the docks without facing millions in fines."
Just then, her private phone rang. It was an unknown number. She answered.
"Clara," a smooth, deep voice said. "Or should I call you Ms. Mason now?"
"Julian," Clara said, recognizing the voice immediately. "I didn't think you had my number."

"I have many things, Clara," Julian said smoothly. "Including your ex-fiancé’s business. I heard you were looking to crush them. I’m afraid I’ve stepped in to spoil your fun."
"You didn't spoil anything, Julian," Clara replied calmly. "You just took out my trash. I should thank you."
