Chapter 18: The Ghost of the Past

The day after the Paris show, Clara was sitting in an upscale café near the Louvre, enjoying a quiet morning with Lucas. They were talking about a joint project—designing a sustainable art academy for underprivileged children.

Suddenly, a shadow fell over their table.

Clara looked up. Her smile faded, replaced by a cold neutrality.

It was Andrew.

He looked terrible. He had traveled to Paris using the last of his savings, hoping for a desperate, final confrontation. His clothes were cheap, his face was gaunt, and his eyes were bloodshot.

"Clara," Andrew rasped, looking at her, then at Lucas. "Please... just five minutes. That’s all I ask."

Lucas started to stand up, his jaw tightening, but Clara placed a gentle hand on his arm, signaling him to stay down.

"Andrew," Clara said, her voice completely detached. "You shouldn't be here."

"I saw the show," Andrew said, his voice trembling. "The dress... the gold thread. I realized... I realized what I lost. Clara, I’m dying inside. Every day is a nightmare. My mother is in a cell, my father won't speak to me. I made a mistake! Can't you see I'm paying for it every single day?"

Clara looked at him. She didn't feel hatred. She didn't feel anger. She felt absolutely nothing. And that was the most brutal punishment of all.

"Andrew," Clara said softly. "The gold thread on that dress didn't fix the old fabric. It created something completely new. The old dress is dead. And so is whatever existed between us."

She signaled the café’s security. "Please enjoy your life, Andrew. Whatever is left of it. But do it far away from me."

As security escorted Andrew away, he looked back one last time, seeing Lucas gently take Clara’s hand, and seeing Clara smile at Lucas—a warm, bright smile she had never given Andrew during their entire relationship.
