Chapter 9: Beneath the Angel

Chapter 9: Beneath the Angel

The old Pierce family chapel stood at the far edge of the estate, hidden beyond rows of towering oak trees.
Christopher had walked past it hundreds of times throughout his life.
As a boy, he came every Sunday with his father.
As a young man, he lit a candle there after Rachel gave birth to Emma.
And on the day Rachel died...
He had knelt before its altar, praying for the strength to raise the little girl he believed he could never publicly call his daughter.
Now, as police cars surrounded the stone building and floodlights pierced the darkness, Christopher realized he had never truly known the place.
Detective Marcus Doyle stepped beside him.
"The crime scene team is ready."
Christopher nodded.
"Let's finish this."
Emma watched from the upstairs window of Pierce Manor.
She could see the flashing blue lights in the distance.
Yvette gently placed a blanket around her shoulders.
"You shouldn't worry."
Emma looked toward the chapel.
"Is Daddy fighting the bad people?"
Yvette smiled softly.
"No."
"He's fighting for you."
Emma quietly took Yvette's hand.
"When Mommy was sick..."
"...she said brave people cry too."
Yvette's eyes filled with tears.
"Your mother was very wise."
Emma looked up.
"Do you think Mommy can see us?"
Yvette kissed the top of her head.
"I believe she can."
"And I think she's very proud of your father."
Emma smiled.
"So am I."
Inside the chapel...
Dust floated through the cold air.
The stained-glass windows glowed beneath police floodlights.
At the center of the altar stood a marble angel nearly ten feet tall.
Its hands were folded in prayer.
Its expression seemed peaceful.
Richard Nolan's final words echoed in Christopher's mind.
Search the chapel... beneath the angel.
The forensic team carefully examined the statue.
Nothing.
No obvious opening.
No hidden compartment.
Christopher slowly walked around it.
His father had once told him every great building carried a secret.
Perhaps this one did too.
Then he noticed something strange.
The angel's right wing bore a faint crack.
Unlike the rest of the marble, this section looked newer.
As though it had once been repaired.
Christopher touched it.
The stone shifted slightly beneath his hand.
"Doyle."
The detective came over.
"What did you find?"
Christopher pressed harder.
A quiet click echoed beneath the floor.
Everyone stepped back.
The marble base slowly slid aside.
Hidden beneath the angel...
A narrow staircase descended into darkness.
No one spoke.
Christopher looked at Doyle.
"We're going down."
The underground chamber was far older than the chapel above.
Stone walls lined the corridor.
Old lantern hooks remained attached to the ceiling.
Someone had built this place decades earlier.
Perhaps even a century ago.
Christopher's flashlight illuminated heavy steel doors at the far end.
One stood slightly open.
Inside...
Shelves.
Boxes.
File cabinets.
Thousands of documents.
Detective Doyle stared in disbelief.
"This isn't a hiding place."
Christopher nodded slowly.
"It's an archive."
Officers immediately began photographing everything.
Christopher opened the nearest cabinet.
Inside were adoption records.
Hospital files.
Birth certificates.
Most carried the logo of the Pierce Children's Foundation.
His heart sank.
Arthur Blackwell had told the truth.
The foundation had not existed solely to help children.
It had hidden something far darker.
Christopher continued searching.
One folder immediately caught his attention.
Its title read:
Special Transfers
He opened it.
Each page listed the name of a child.
Date of arrival.
Date of departure.
Recipient.
Every child had disappeared into private custody.
Many recipients were wealthy families.
Some names belonged to influential politicians.
Others...
Christopher recognized.
Directors.
Judges.
Business leaders.
People who had publicly praised the Pierce Foundation for decades.
Detective Doyle quietly said,
"This is child trafficking."
Christopher nodded.
His stomach twisted.
Rachel had uncovered an empire built upon stolen childhoods.
No wonder she had been silenced.
An officer called from the back of the chamber.
"Sir!"
Christopher hurried over.
The officer pointed toward a large iron safe.
Unlike everything else underground, it looked modern.
Recently installed.
The safe door was locked with both a keypad and fingerprint scanner.
Detective Doyle frowned.
"We'll need specialists."
Christopher stared at it.
"No."
He reached toward the scanner.
Doyle looked confused.
"What are you doing?"
Christopher placed his thumb against the glass.
Nothing happened.
Then...
The scanner flashed green.
A mechanical click echoed through the room.
The safe opened.
Christopher frowned.
"My fingerprint?"
Doyle looked inside.
"The safe was programmed for a Pierce family member."
Christopher slowly pulled out the first item.
Rachel's diary.
He recognized the leather cover immediately.
She had written in it every evening.
Christopher thought it had been destroyed after her death.
Instead...
Someone had hidden it.
Beneath the diary rested another object.
A sealed envelope.
Across the front were handwritten words.
For Christopher and Emma
His hands shook as he opened it.
Inside lay a folded letter.
Rachel's handwriting.
He began reading aloud.
"If you have found this letter, then you already know my death wasn't an accident."
Emma's name appeared in the next sentence.
"Tell our little girl she was loved every single day of my life."
Christopher's voice broke.
"Never allow her to believe she caused any of this."
Tears rolled silently down his face.
"The people responsible will eventually destroy themselves, because evil always mistakes fear for loyalty."
Detective Doyle quietly looked away, allowing Christopher a private moment.
Rachel's final paragraph made him stop breathing.
"Christopher... there is one truth I never told you."
"Estelle Pierce is not the person leading this organization."
Christopher frowned.
He turned the page.
"She serves someone else."
The underground chamber fell silent.
Christopher continued reading.
"Find the man whose name never appears."
"He is the one everyone protects."
"His initials are..."
The sentence stopped.
The page had been torn away.
Christopher searched the envelope frantically.
Nothing.
The final page was missing.
Someone had removed it.
Above ground...
A black helicopter flew silently toward Pierce Manor.
Its lights remained off.
It landed in a field nearly a mile away.
Several armed men climbed out.
Their leader spoke into a radio.
"Target confirmed."
"Proceed to extraction."
Back underground...
One forensic officer examined Rachel's diary.
"There are missing pages."
Christopher nodded.
"How many?"
"At least twelve."
The officer looked up.
"They were removed recently."
Christopher's expression hardened.
"Someone has been here."
Not years ago.
Recently.
Someone had entered the hidden archive after Richard's death.
Someone was still searching for evidence.
Detective Doyle's radio suddenly came alive.
"Emergency!"
"Emergency!"
"This is Pierce Manor!"
Doyle grabbed the radio.
"Go ahead!"
A terrified officer answered.
"We're under attack!"
"Multiple armed intruders!"
"They're trying to reach the main house!"
Christopher's heart stopped.
"Emma."
Without another word, he sprinted toward the hidden staircase.
Pierce Manor had become a battlefield.
Police vehicles blocked the front entrance.
Officers exchanged gunfire with masked attackers hiding among the trees.
Windows shattered.
Security alarms screamed.
Christopher jumped from his vehicle before it had completely stopped.
"Where's Emma?"
Yvette ran out the front door, holding Emma tightly.
"We're here!"
Christopher rushed toward them.
Emma threw herself into his arms.
"Daddy!"
He hugged her fiercely.
"I've got you."
One officer hurried over.
"They broke through the east gate."
"How many?"
"At least eight."
Detective Doyle looked toward the burning security booth.
"They weren't trying to escape."
Christopher frowned.
"They were trying to enter."
An explosion echoed from the rear gardens.
The attackers immediately retreated.
Within seconds...
They disappeared into the darkness.
Christopher looked confused.
"They're leaving?"
Doyle slowly nodded.
"Yes."
"They came for something."
Christopher suddenly remembered Rachel's diary.
He reached into his coat.
Still there.
The envelope.
Still there.
Then his face changed.
The red ledger Arthur had hidden beneath the gazebo...
Was gone.
Someone had stolen it during the chaos.
Hours later...
The estate slowly grew quiet again.
Police officers continued collecting evidence.
Christopher tucked Emma into bed himself.
She held his hand.
"Daddy?"
"Yes?"
"Are we going to lose?"
Christopher smiled gently.
He brushed a strand of hair away from her face.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because your mommy spent eight years making sure the truth could survive."
Emma smiled sleepily.
"And because you're here."
Christopher kissed her forehead.
"I'll always be here."
She closed her eyes.
Within minutes, she was asleep.
Christopher quietly left the room.
Waiting outside the bedroom door stood Detective Doyle.
He held a single evidence bag.
Inside...
Was a torn page.
The missing final page from Rachel's letter.
"It was found in one of the attackers' vehicles," Doyle said.
Christopher carefully unfolded it.
Rachel's final words were still readable.
"The man behind everything..."
"The one even Estelle obeys..."
"is..."
Christopher's eyes widened.
He whispered the name aloud.
"No..."
Detective Doyle looked at him.
"You know him?"
Christopher slowly nodded.
The color drained from his face.
"He's been standing beside my family..."
May you like
"...for more than thirty years."
