Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The first rays of morning sunlight never reached Christopher Pierce.

He had not slept.

Rachel's final video replayed over and over in his mind, every sentence revealing another lie his family had built over the past eight years.

Someone had threatened Rachel.

Someone had hidden the true inheritance.

Someone had tried to murder Emma.

And now, someone had poisoned Juliette before she could testify.

The pattern was no longer a coincidence.

It was a conspiracy.

Christopher stood before the large windows of his father's old office, staring across the Pierce estate.

The gardens looked peaceful.

Birds sang from the ancient oak trees.

Gardeners trimmed roses as though nothing had happened.

But beneath the beauty of Pierce Manor, he now saw only danger.

A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.

"Come in."

Detective Marcus Doyle stepped inside, carrying a thick brown evidence folder.

He looked more serious than Christopher had ever seen him.

"I wish I had better news."

Christopher motioned toward the chair.

"What happened?"

Doyle remained standing.

"Juliette regained consciousness."

Christopher's eyes widened.

"Can I speak with her?"

"For about five minutes."

"What did she say?"

The detective slowly opened the folder.

"Before we could begin the formal interview..."

"...she asked for you."

Christopher immediately reached for his coat.

"Take me there."

Doyle didn't move.

"There is one condition."

Christopher frowned.

"She believes someone inside the hospital is working for your family."

Christopher's expression darkened.

"My family?"

Doyle nodded.

"She refused to speak until the room was completely cleared."

Christopher thought for a moment.

"Then let's go."

Thirty minutes later...

The intensive care unit was unusually quiet.

Two police officers guarded Juliette's room.

Another stood at the emergency stairwell.

Doyle had personally ordered the security.

No visitors.

No flowers.

No deliveries.

Nothing entered without inspection.

Christopher walked into the room alone.

Juliette looked nothing like the elegant socialite who had once graced magazine covers.

Her skin was pale.

Dark circles surrounded her eyes.

An oxygen tube rested beneath her nose.

She looked frightened.

For the first time since meeting her...

She looked honest.

"You came."

Christopher remained several feet away.

"I came for the truth."

She lowered her eyes.

"I deserve that."

Several long seconds passed.

Finally she whispered,

"I never wanted Emma dead."

Christopher's jaw tightened.

"But you pushed her."

Juliette closed her eyes.

"I know."

"I'll spend the rest of my life regretting that moment."

Christopher didn't answer.

She slowly continued.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like that."

"What wasn't?"

"They promised..."

She stopped herself.

Christopher stepped closer.

"Who promised?"

Juliette looked toward the closed door before answering.

"Estelle."

The room fell silent.

Christopher didn't react.

Not because he was surprised.

Because hearing the words aloud made them real.

Juliette continued.

"When I first met your mother..."

"...she already knew everything about me."

"My debts."

"My father's bankruptcy."

"My younger brother's medical bills."

"Everything."

Christopher listened quietly.

"She said she could solve every problem."

"What did she want?"

Juliette laughed bitterly.

"You."

Christopher remained expressionless.

"She wanted me to marry you."

"Become the perfect future Mrs. Pierce."

"And make sure Emma never inherited anything."

Christopher slowly clenched his fists.

"At first..."

Juliette whispered,

"...it was just emotional abuse."

"I was told to isolate her."

"Convince everyone she was unstable."

"Make you believe she needed professional treatment."

Christopher remembered every meeting.

Every complaint.

Every report claiming Emma was becoming difficult.

He had believed them.

Every single one.

Juliette wiped away tears.

"But then Rachel's lawyer started asking questions."

Christopher froze.

"Rachel had a lawyer?"

Juliette nodded.

"One Estelle could never find."

Christopher leaned forward.

"Who?"

Juliette whispered a name.

"Daniel Harper."

Christopher searched his memory.

Nothing.

"I've never heard of him."

"Exactly."

"He disappeared before Rachel died."

Christopher frowned.

"Disappeared?"

Juliette slowly nodded.

"No resignation."

"No obituary."

"No public records."

"He simply vanished."

Before Christopher could ask another question...

The heart monitor suddenly beeped faster.

Juliette's breathing became uneven.

She stared toward the hallway with terrified eyes.

"He's here."

Christopher turned.

"What?"

"Someone is here."

The hospital door slowly opened.

A nurse entered carrying fresh medication.

Christopher immediately noticed something strange.

She wore no identification badge.

Detective Doyle had specifically ordered every employee to display one.

The nurse smiled politely.

"Time for her medication."

Christopher didn't move.

"What floor do you usually work on?"

The woman hesitated.

"The third."

"This is the fifth."

Her smile disappeared.

In one swift motion she reached into her pocket.

Christopher lunged forward.

The syringe never reached Juliette.

It shattered against the floor.

The woman tried to run.

Christopher grabbed her arm.

She twisted free with surprising strength and sprinted toward the hallway.

"Stop her!"

Police officers rushed forward.

The woman pushed one officer down the stairs before disappearing through the emergency exit.

Within seconds alarms echoed throughout the hospital.

Detective Doyle rushed into the room.

"What happened?"

Christopher pointed toward the broken syringe.

"That wasn't a nurse."

Doyle immediately called for forensic technicians.

One officer picked up the shattered syringe using gloves.

Christopher looked back toward Juliette.

She was crying uncontrollably.

"I told you."

"They'll kill anyone who talks."

Two hours later...

The laboratory confirmed everyone's fears.

The syringe contained enough poison to stop a person's heart within minutes.

Juliette hadn't imagined the danger.

Someone really wanted her dead.

Doyle gathered Christopher inside a private conference room.

"We checked every hospital employee."

Christopher waited.

"No one recognizes that woman."

"No records."

"No fingerprints."

"No badge."

Christopher folded his arms.

"A professional."

Doyle nodded.

"Very."

He slid another folder across the table.

"We also searched Juliette's apartment."

Christopher opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Hidden cameras.

Printed emails.

Bank transfers.

Several photographs immediately caught his attention.

One showed Estelle sitting across from Juliette inside a private restaurant.

Another showed envelopes of cash changing hands.

A third...

Made Christopher stop breathing.

Rachel.

The photograph showed Rachel standing outside a courthouse.

Taken only three days before her death.

She wasn't alone.

Standing beside her was a middle-aged man carrying a leather briefcase.

The back of the photograph contained one handwritten sentence.

Daniel Harper

Christopher stared at the face.

He had definitely never met him.

Doyle pointed toward the picture.

"We believe this is Rachel's attorney."

Christopher nodded slowly.

"If he disappeared..."

"...someone made sure he disappeared."

Late that afternoon...

Christopher returned home.

Emma waited on the library sofa reading one of Rachel's favorite storybooks.

The moment she saw him she ran into his arms.

He hugged her tightly.

"Daddy..."

"Yes?"

"Are the bad people gone?"

Christopher looked into her innocent eyes.

He wished he could say yes.

Instead...

He answered honestly.

"I'm making sure they can't hurt you anymore."

Emma nodded.

Then reached into her pocket.

"I found something."

She handed him a folded piece of paper.

"It's from Mommy."

Christopher unfolded it carefully.

It wasn't a letter.

It was a child's drawing.

Rachel had drawn herself.

Christopher.

And baby Emma holding both of their hands.

On the back Rachel had written one sentence.

Families aren't chosen by money. They're chosen by love.

Christopher smiled through tears.

He kissed Emma's forehead.

"I promise you..."

"...I'm never letting anyone take you away again."

Emma hugged him tighter.

Neither of them noticed the small hidden camera tucked inside the antique grandfather clock across the library.

A tiny red light blinked once.

Then disappeared.

Miles away...

Inside a luxury penthouse overlooking the city...

A man in a tailored black suit watched Christopher and Emma through a live video feed.

He quietly turned toward Estelle Pierce, who sat calmly beside the fireplace.

"They've opened Rachel's studio."

Estelle didn't look surprised.

"I expected they would."

"The girl is still alive."

Estelle closed the book resting on her lap.

"For now."

The man hesitated.

"What about Christopher?"

For the first time...

Estelle's expression softened.

Not with kindness.

With regret.

"My son has become exactly like his father."

She slowly stood.

"And that makes him dangerous."

The man asked one final question.

"Should we proceed?"

Estelle looked toward the burning fireplace.

The flames reflected in her cold gray eyes.

She answered without hesitation.

"Begin Phase Two."

Far across the city, completely unaware of the order that had just been given...

Christopher tucked Emma into bed.

He kissed her forehead.

She smiled sleepily.

"Goodnight, Daddy."

"Goodnight, sweetheart."

He quietly closed her bedroom door.

As he walked down the hallway...

He noticed something lying on the floor just outside her room.

A single white envelope.

No stamp.

No address.

Only two words written across the front.

Too Late.

Christopher slowly opened it.

Inside was a recent photograph.

Someone had secretly taken a picture of Emma playing in the mansion garden...

Earlier that afternoon.

On the back of the photograph, a message had been written in black ink.

We missed once.

May you like

We won't miss again.
