Chapter 1: The Truth Beneath the Water

Chapter 1: The Truth Beneath the Water
Emma's tiny fingers clung to Christopher Pierce's soaked dress shirt as though letting go would pull her back into the dark water.
Her entire body trembled.
The servants standing around the courtyard had never seen the eight-year-old cry like this. Emma had always been unusually quiet. Even when she scraped her knees or caught a fever, she rarely made a sound. Rachel Monroe had once told Christopher that Emma hated causing trouble.
Now every sob echoed through the marble courtyard.
Christopher wrapped his suit jacket around his daughter, shielding her from the cold breeze that swept across the estate. Her wet blonde hair stuck to her cheeks, and her lips still carried a faint blue tint from the icy pool.
"You're safe," he whispered.
Emma buried her face deeper into his chest.
"I've got you."
For years Christopher Pierce had believed he was protecting Emma by hiding the truth about her birth.
Instead...
He had delivered her straight into the hands of monsters.
Behind them, security guards restrained Juliette as she struggled against their grip.
"This is insane!" she screamed.
"I didn't push her!"
"I was trying to save her!"
Christopher didn't even look at her.
His entire attention remained on Emma.
That hurt Juliette more than the handcuffs beginning to close around her wrists.
For months she had carefully built the image of a loving fiancée.
She organized charity galas.
She smiled for magazines.
She volunteered at children's hospitals while photographers watched.
Everyone believed she adored children.
Everyone except Emma.
Emma had never trusted her.
And now Christopher understood why.
Mrs. Yvette Sloan stepped beside him, still holding the small digital recorder that had changed everything.
Her weathered hands shook.
"I should have told you sooner, sir."
Christopher slowly turned toward her.
"No."
His voice was calm.
"You saved my daughter's life."
Tears filled Yvette's eyes.
"I kept hoping I was wrong."
"I kept praying those conversations meant something else."
"But after today..."
She looked toward the pool.
"There was no misunderstanding."
Christopher nodded once.
"There won't be another chance for them."
The guards began leading Juliette toward the front gate.
Suddenly she stopped struggling.
Instead, she smiled.
It was a strange smile.
Almost confident.
"You think you've won, Christopher?"
He finally looked at her.
"You've only heard one recording."
His expression didn't change.
Juliette laughed softly.
"You still don't understand your family."
"You never did."
Before anyone could ask what she meant, a powerful voice echoed from the second-floor balcony.
"Release her."
Every head turned upward.
Estelle Pierce stood at the railing.
Elegant.
Perfectly composed.
Dressed in cream-colored silk despite the chaos unfolding below.
The seventy-two-year-old matriarch carried herself like a queen surveying disobedient subjects.
Her silver hair was flawless.
Her diamond necklace sparkled beneath the afternoon sun.
She looked neither frightened nor guilty.
Only irritated.
Christopher stared at his mother.
"No."
The single word stunned everyone.
Estelle slowly descended the grand staircase.
Each step clicked against the polished marble.
She stopped only a few feet from Christopher.
"You are embarrassing this family."
Christopher's jaw tightened.
"My daughter almost died."
Estelle glanced toward Emma with all the warmth one might give a piece of forgotten furniture.
"The child slipped."
Christopher held up the recorder.
"We both know she didn't."
For the first time...
Estelle's eyes flickered.
Only for a heartbeat.
But Christopher noticed.
"So."
She sighed.
"Yvette has been spying."
Yvette straightened her shoulders.
"I've been protecting a child."
Estelle looked at the elderly housekeeper with unmistakable contempt.
"I took you into this house thirty years ago."
"I paid for your husband's medical care."
"I treated you like family."
Yvette met her gaze without flinching.
"You treated me like an employee."
"But Emma..."
She looked at the frightened little girl.
"Emma became my family."
Silence filled the courtyard.
Christopher had known Yvette since childhood.
She had bandaged his scraped knees.
Read him bedtime stories.
Stayed awake beside his hospital bed after he broke his arm at twelve.
She had been more present than either of his parents.
And today...
She had risked everything.
Estelle folded her hands.
"This discussion will happen privately."
"No."
Christopher's answer came instantly.
"It happens here."
"In front of everyone."
The servants exchanged nervous glances.
Nobody in Pierce Manor had ever heard Christopher openly challenge his mother.
Not once.
Not in forty-three years.
Estelle noticed their reactions.
Her voice became colder.
"You forget who built this empire."
Christopher looked directly into her eyes.
"No."
"I remember exactly."
"And today I also remember who nearly destroyed my daughter."
Emma slowly lifted her head.
"Daddy..."
Christopher smiled gently.
"I'm here."
She hesitated.
Then whispered something so quietly only he could hear.
"I didn't fall."
His heart stopped.
"What happened?"
Emma looked toward Juliette.
Her tiny body began shaking again.
"She..."
Emma swallowed hard.
"She held my shoulders."
Christopher felt his stomach twist.
"I told her I couldn't swim."
"She said..."
Emma's voice broke.
"'That's why nobody will believe you climbed in by yourself.'"
Christopher closed his eyes.
For one terrible second he imagined arriving one minute later.
One minute.
That was all that had separated his daughter from death.
He opened his eyes again.
There was no hesitation left.
"Call the police."
Juliette's face drained of color.
"Christopher!"
"You can't!"
"You don't know everything!"
"Oh?"
He stepped toward her.
"Then tell me."
Juliette looked desperately toward Estelle.
The older woman remained perfectly still.
Not a word.
Not a gesture.
Nothing.
Juliette realized she was alone.
Her breathing quickened.
"I..."
She hesitated.
Christopher noticed.
His mother had abandoned her.
Just as she abandoned everyone who became inconvenient.
Police sirens echoed faintly in the distance.
Someone had already made the call.
Juliette began crying.
Real tears this time.
"They promised me..."
Christopher frowned.
"They?"
She immediately shook her head.
"I didn't mean—"
"Who promised you?"
Juliette bit her lip so hard it bled.
Estelle spoke before she could answer.
"My son's fiancée is clearly in shock."
Christopher turned sharply.
"You don't get to speak for her."
The words struck Estelle harder than a slap.
For years Christopher had obeyed every expectation.
He attended the schools she chose.
Married the woman she approved.
Expanded the company according to her strategy.
Even after Rachel died...
He buried his grief because his mother insisted scandal would destroy the Pierce name.
Today...
That obedient son no longer existed.
The police cars entered through the estate gates.
Two detectives stepped out.
Detective Marcus Doyle looked around the courtyard before approaching.
"We received reports of attempted murder."
Christopher nodded.
"I made the call."
He gently placed Emma into Yvette's waiting arms.
"Please take her inside."
Emma grabbed his hand.
"Don't leave."
"I'm not."
He knelt beside her.
"I'll be with you soon."
"I promise."
She searched his face.
Children always knew when adults lied.
Today...
She believed him.
Yvette carried Emma into the mansion.
The little girl looked back three times before disappearing through the front doors.
Christopher watched until she was gone.
Only then did he face the detectives.
"I have evidence."
He handed over the recorder.
Detective Doyle listened carefully.
His expression darkened with every passing second.
When the recording ended, he looked at Juliette.
"Ma'am."
"We need you to come with us."
Juliette stepped backward.
"This recording doesn't prove anything."
"It proves intent."
"It proves conspiracy."
"And depending on what our investigation finds..."
He glanced toward the pool.
"It may prove attempted homicide."
She suddenly pointed at Estelle.
"It wasn't my idea!"
The entire courtyard froze.
Even Estelle blinked.
Juliette covered her mouth.
Too late.
The words had escaped.
Christopher slowly turned toward his mother.
Estelle remained composed.
"Grief makes people irrational."
Juliette shook her head wildly.
"No!"
"You told me—"
She stopped herself again.
Detective Doyle noticed.
"I think we'll continue this conversation downtown."
As officers escorted Juliette away, she twisted around one last time.
"Christopher!"
"If you search Rachel's old studio..."
"You'll understand everything!"
Christopher's heartbeat quickened.
Rachel's studio.
The place had been locked since the day she died.
Nobody entered.
Nobody touched anything.
His mother insisted preserving it would only prolong his grief.
So Christopher had obeyed.
Now...
He wondered whether that had been another mistake.
Juliette disappeared into the police car.
The gates closed behind them.
Silence settled over Pierce Manor.
Christopher faced his mother.
"What's in Rachel's studio?"
Estelle's eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly.
"Old memories."
"I'll decide that."
She sighed.
"You are emotional."
"My daughter nearly died."
"You are emotional."
Christopher took one slow step closer.
"For eight years..."
"I believed Rachel left Emma alone."
"I believed protecting the family meant hiding the truth."
"I believed every warning you gave me."
His voice hardened.
"No more."
Estelle studied him.
Then, for the first time in years, genuine concern crossed her face.
Not concern for Emma.
Not concern for Juliette.
Concern that she was losing control.
"You don't know what opening that room will start."
Christopher answered without hesitation.
"I know exactly what it will start."
"The truth."
He walked past her toward the mansion.
Estelle didn't try to stop him.
She simply stood motionless beneath the afternoon sun.
Watching.
Calculating.
Planning.
Because she knew something Christopher didn't.
Rachel Monroe had left behind far more than memories inside that locked studio.
Hidden beneath the floorboards...
Locked inside an old wooden chest...
Was a collection of letters, photographs, legal documents...
And one video recording.
A recording Rachel had made only six days before her mysterious death.
A recording that began with a single sentence.
"If you're watching this, Christopher..."
May you like
"...someone finally tried to kill our daughter."
