Chapter 3: The Video They Tried to Bury

Rain pounded against the stained-glass windows of Pierce Manor, turning the outside world into a blur of gray and silver. Thunder rolled across the sky, but inside Rachel Monroe's studio, another storm was about to begin.

Christopher Pierce sat on the worn wooden floor beside the cedar chest.

The old video camera rested on the table before him.

Yvette stood quietly near the doorway, her hands folded tightly together.

Neither of them spoke.

For eight years, Rachel's final words had waited inside that tiny memory card.

Now the truth was only one press of a button away.

Christopher picked up the camera.

His thumb hovered over the power switch.

His heart raced.

"I should have been here," he whispered.

Yvette looked at him gently.

"Rachel never blamed you."

"I blamed myself enough for both of us."

He inhaled slowly and pressed the button.

The screen flickered.

Static appeared for several seconds before clearing into focus.

Rachel Monroe smiled at the camera.

She looked pale.

Much thinner than Christopher remembered.

But her eyes still carried the warmth that had first made him fall in love with her.

Behind her, sunlight poured through the windows of the same studio where Christopher now sat.

She looked directly into the lens.

"If you're watching this..."

She paused, taking a shaky breath.

"...then something happened to me."

Christopher lowered his head.

Hearing her voice again felt impossible.

Like listening to a ghost.

Rachel continued.

"Christopher, before anything else..."

"I love you."

"I always will."

Tears slid silently down Christopher's face.

"I know you've probably spent years wondering why I left."

"The truth is..."

"I never wanted to."

"I was trying to protect Emma."

Christopher looked up sharply.

Rachel reached for a folder resting beside her.

"If this recording survived, then our daughter is still in danger."

Yvette covered her mouth.

Rachel's voice remained calm, but there was fear beneath every word.

"I didn't leave because I stopped loving you."

"I left because someone inside the Pierce family threatened Emma."

Christopher felt his stomach tighten.

Rachel continued.

"They said an illegitimate heir would destroy the family's reputation."

"They said Emma would never be accepted."

"But that wasn't the real reason."

She slowly opened the folder.

"The real reason..."

"...was the inheritance."

Christopher frowned.

Rachel removed a thick stack of papers.

"Three years before Emma was born, your grandfather amended the Pierce Trust."

"The amendment was never announced publicly."

"It states that the eldest biological child of the family chairman becomes the controlling beneficiary upon reaching adulthood."

Christopher stared at the screen.

He had never heard of such an amendment.

Rachel nodded as if anticipating his disbelief.

"I didn't believe it either."

"So I hired an independent attorney."

"He confirmed every page."

She held one document toward the camera.

"I made copies."

"They're inside the cedar chest."

Christopher immediately reached for the documents lying beside him.

His eyes searched the pages.

There it was.

The signature.

His grandfather.

Witnesses.

Official seals.

Everything appeared authentic.

Rachel's voice interrupted his thoughts.

"If Emma is publicly recognized as your daughter..."

"...she eventually controls nearly fifty-one percent of the Pierce Family Trust."

Yvette gasped.

"My God..."

Christopher remained speechless.

Fifty-one percent.

Enough to control the entire empire.

Rachel looked directly into the camera.

"That is why they wanted her hidden."

"And if hiding her failed..."

Rachel's voice broke.

"...they planned something worse."

The room fell silent.

Christopher clenched his fists.

Rachel carefully wiped away a tear.

"I recorded conversations."

"I copied emails."

"I documented meetings."

"I hid everything."

"If you're watching this, Christopher..."

"...please don't let Emma grow up believing she was unwanted."

The camera briefly shook.

Rachel looked toward the studio door.

Someone had knocked.

She waited several seconds before continuing.

"I don't have much time."

"If anything happens to me..."

"Promise me you'll trust Emma."

"Children rarely invent fear."

"They only learn to hide it."

Christopher buried his face in his hands.

Every word felt like another knife.

Emma had tried to tell him.

Again and again.

And he had listened to the adults instead.

Rachel reached into her pocket and removed a silver necklace.

It held a tiny heart-shaped key.

Christopher frowned.

The brass key Yvette had found...

wasn't the only one.

Rachel smiled sadly.

"If Yvette keeps her promise, she'll eventually find one key."

"But you'll need two."

"The second is hidden where we had our first picnic."

Christopher's eyes widened.

Lakeside Park.

The old oak tree.

The place where he had first told Rachel he loved her.

Rachel's smile faded.

"There are things hidden there..."

"...things even your mother never found."

Suddenly the studio door behind Rachel opened.

The camera shifted.

A shadow appeared.

Only for a second.

A man's voice echoed faintly.

"Rachel?"

Christopher leaned closer.

He recognized the voice.

But he couldn't place it.

Rachel quickly turned back toward the camera.

"I have to go."

"If I'm wrong..."

She smiled weakly.

"...you'll laugh at how paranoid I became."

"But if I'm right..."

She looked directly into the lens.

"...never trust anyone simply because they share your last name."

The screen went black.

Silence.

Christopher remained frozen.

Yvette slowly sat beside him.

Neither spoke for almost a full minute.

Finally Christopher whispered,

"She knew."

Yvette nodded.

"She knew everything."

Christopher stared at the legal documents.

"So Grandfather changed the trust."

"Yes."

"My mother hid it."

"Apparently."

"And Rachel died before she could expose it."

Yvette lowered her eyes.

"It seems that way."

Christopher suddenly stood.

"I'm done waiting."

He gathered every document from the cedar chest into a leather portfolio.

The video camera followed.

"So what are you going to do?"

Christopher's answer came without hesitation.

"I'm going to my father's office."

Yvette frowned.

"But your father has been dead for twelve years."

Christopher looked toward the ceiling.

"Exactly."

"My mother has kept it locked ever since."

"If Grandfather changed the trust..."

"There may be another copy there."

...

Forty minutes later Christopher unlocked the old executive office that had once belonged to his father.

Dust covered every surface.

The room smelled of aged leather and forgotten memories.

Nothing had changed.

Books lined the shelves.

Family portraits hung on the walls.

A large mahogany desk stood before the windows overlooking the estate.

Christopher opened drawer after drawer.

Nothing.

Tax files.

Old contracts.

Business magazines.

Then...

One drawer refused to open.

Locked.

He searched the desk until he found a tiny hidden key taped beneath the center drawer.

Click.

The lock released.

Inside rested a thick black ledger.

Across the cover, written in his father's handwriting, were four words.

Read Alone If Necessary.

Christopher slowly opened it.

The first page contained only one sentence.

Never let Estelle control Emma.

Christopher's blood ran cold.

His father knew.

Years before his death.

He turned another page.

Every entry detailed arguments between his parents.

Disputes over the family trust.

Warnings about Emma.

Warnings about Rachel.

Warnings about Estelle.

One passage made Christopher stop breathing.

"I believe Estelle has begun speaking with outside investigators regarding Rachel. If anything happens to that young woman, this diary must eventually reach Christopher."

Christopher slammed the diary shut.

"No..."

It couldn't be.

Could it?

At that exact moment, his phone rang.

Detective Doyle.

Christopher answered immediately.

"Doyle."

"Mr. Pierce..."

The detective sounded tense.

"We have a problem."

"What happened?"

"Juliette agreed to make a full statement."

Christopher felt a flicker of hope.

"That's good."

"No."

Doyle's voice turned grim.

"She never got the chance."

Christopher's heart sank.

"What do you mean?"

"There was an incident at the county detention center."

Christopher gripped the phone tighter.

"What kind of incident?"

A long silence followed.

Then Doyle spoke.

"Someone poisoned her dinner."

Christopher closed his eyes.

"Is she alive?"

"Barely."

"She's unconscious."

"The doctors don't know if she'll survive the night."

Christopher looked toward the diary in his hands.

Someone was eliminating witnesses.

First Rachel.

Then the recording.

Now Juliette.

Which meant one thing.

The conspiracy wasn't over.

It was still alive.

And someone inside—or connected to—the Pierce family was desperately trying to erase every person who knew the truth.

Christopher slowly looked toward the hallway outside the office.

For the first time in his own home...

He wondered if someone was already watching him.

Behind the half-closed study door, hidden in the darkness of the corridor, a pair of eyes silently moved away.

A shadow disappeared before Christopher could notice.

And in another part of the mansion, behind the locked door of her private bedroom, Estelle Pierce calmly placed a phone back onto its cradle.

Then she looked at an old family portrait hanging above the fireplace.

"There are too many secrets," she murmured softly.

"And secrets..."

May you like

"...must stay buried."
